Arthur Huff Welch

April 8, 1926 — June 24, 2017

Surrounded by family he peacefully returned to his heavenly home after 3 1/2 years of patient bed confinement.
Born April 8, 1926 in a humble log home in Cowley, Big Horn, Wyoming where he was raised to manhood by parents, Frederick Arza and Nora Huff Welch, along with siblings Arza Huff, Virginia (Marsh), and Fred, all of whom have preceded him in passing. Arthur met his wife, Dixie Jones at BYU and they married in the Los Angeles temple 1956. They have been blessed with 8 children: Valrick (Turiana Bangke), Von (Karen Baker), Jonathan (Diane Boyack), Julia (Dennis Gee), Nathan (Jami Livingston), Camille Terry, Mary Jill (Kyle Wall), Mya (David Anderson), 41 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 1 foster Navajo daughter, Janaleigh. All except one great grand baby remain alive.
He was a lifetime active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a mission in Hawaii, mainly among Japanese people. He served in various positions such as teacher, High Councilman. He and his wife together served as ward librarians, nursery leaders, Primary teachers, 10 years as role players at the Provo MTC, and unofficial missionaries and volunteers of a Head Start program in Saipan. They enjoyed many years at Mapleton Stake Bennion Creek Campground making futile war against the invasive thistle weeds. Arthur had a pet hobby of visiting elderly, disabled friends and writing up their memoirs. He enjoyed family camping, singing with ukulele, rocks, hiking Maple Mountain, and running an orchard that supported missionaries. He enjoyed keeping abreast of current events worldwide, thus preparing to vote in every election. He enjoyed growing a small vegetable garden and flowers. Remnants of a secret garden still blooms where he planted along Maple Mountain after first removing bags of trash. He planted seeds of appreciation for God's creations in hearts of his children as they hiked, played, camped, witnessed sunsets on the mountain. He served in the U.S. Army as a medic stationed in Korea 1945-1947. During this time, he organized a base branch of LDS church.
He studied at Snow College, Brigham Young University, University of Utah, and in California at Claremont College, San Diego State College, completing a Master's Degree. He taught school 33 years, various levels including 6th grade in Manti Utah, Sellers School, Covina, CA, English, remedial reading, accelerated reading, 8th grade, high school, Weber State College, Provo School District, BYU teacher training school as emeritus professor. He conducted workshops around the state promoting reading skills. In 1974, he was the administrator of BYU learning disability clinic. He was a co-editor of a remedial reading magazine, publishing original strategies. It was often necessary to work part time jobs while teaching in order to support a growing family. Representing dedicated teachers, he was chosen to be one of the Olympic torch carriers in 2002. A member of Sons of Utah Pioneer, he wrote a documented biography of his father a Wyoming pioneer.
Intent upon keeping healthy, he jogged, swam and maintained a healthy diet. Like eradicating thistle, he has been engaged for 14 years in another futile battle called Parkinson Disease. The family has heartfelt gratitude for professional medical guidance from Dr. Steffens neurology CAMT and Dr. Von Welch, Valeo home services and hospice, especially Tanika Farnsworth, Bill Mitchell, Parkinson Support Group led by Randy and Liz Covington and countless services from friends, neighbors, ward members, family, unseen angels.
Arthur lived a life of integrity, humility, purity, kindness, love of all persons he knew.
Viewing will be held at the Mapleton White Church, Maple and Main Street Mon. June 26, 6-8 pm and on Tues. June 27 prior to services at 11 am. Interment will be in the Mapleton City Cemetery.
