Dorothy Leone (Ellsworth) Roundy

February 23, 1923 — October 8, 2017

Dorothy Leone Ellsworth Roundy, 94, passed away of causes incident to age on Sunday, October 8, 2017 in Cottonwood Heights Utah.  Dorothy was born In Lewisville Idaho, February 23, 1923 to Preston and Edna Ellsworth, the seventh of nine children. She married Max Liston Roundy on October 30, 1948 in Lewisville Idaho and moved to Provo Utah, later Springville, and finally Mapleton.  They raised three sons and one daughter on the Roundy farm along with lots of fruit.  They were sealed in the Provo Utah Temple in 1976.
Her childhood nickname was “Spunky” and all who knew her would agree that her ‘gung ho’ attitude, zest for life, and ability to stand up for herself never changed although in recent years she told everyone she met her theme song was “The Old Grey Mare She Ain’t What She Used to Be!”  Dorothy learned to work on her parent’s farm and to cook at her mother’s side, and found time to play softball, swim in the canal, and beat her brothers and their friends at marbles.  She graduated from Midway High in 1941, attended Eastern Oregon College, BYU, and graduated from Utah State University in 1945 with a degree in Foods and Nutrition.  She completed a one year internship in Dietetics at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and worked as Dietician at Utah Valley Hospital from 1947 until her retirement in 1983.
Dorothy was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in Primary and Mutual, as a visiting teacher, and as Compassionate Service leader for many years.  It was almost worth being ill to have her bring in a meal, and people lined up at the 24th of July celebration bake sale to get one of her pies.  She enjoyed her friendships in the Altrusa Club, D.U.P., Book Club, USDC Parent Council, Empty Nesters, and her 4 wheeler group.   She and Max enjoyed traveling, especially to his WWII Corps reunions, and their season tickets to BYU basketball.  She was proud of her independence, and how she kept the home and farm going and took care of herself after Max died in 2001.   We couldn’t count the quilts she’s made and given away, the raspberries picked from her legendary patch, the fruit canned or made into jam, the hours driving the old Case tractor or helping Max sort peaches and apples, bouquets of her roses and peonies, cookies from her cookie jar, chocolate and carrot cakes, watering turns, card games, early morning walks, delicious meals, and beautifully set tables to mention just a few… but  we can’t forget her rolls!   To top it off, she did it all while wearing a dress! She loved Maple Mountain, burnt almond fudge ice cream, and most of all her family.   Her door was always open to family and friends who enjoyed her wonderful food, good company, and a good night’s rest, with waffles or pancakes and fresh squeezed orange juice for breakfast.  Family was the most important thing in her life and she leaves a legacy of hard work, fortitude, a positive “can do” attitude, and strong family values.
She was preceded in death by her husband Max L. Roundy, and grand-daughter Alyssa.  She is survived by her children James (Margaret), Gilbert, AZ; Evan (Melanie), Cottonwood Heights, UT; Frank (Kristi), Loveland, CO; and Cheryl, American Fork, UT; 17 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren; brother Elmer Ellsworth, and nieces and nephews.  The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to Dorothy’s neighbors and friends, as well as the staff at The Coventry, and Solstice Hospice for their love, and exceptional care and kindness.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, October 14 the Mapleton Stake Center, 970 N. 400 E.  Family and friends may visit Friday, October 13 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Wheeler Mortuary, and before the funeral from 11:30 to 12:30pm.  Interment at the Evergreen Cemetery in Mapleton.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Utah State Developmental Center.  Condolences may be sent to www.wheeler mortuaries.com
