1942 Douglas 2017

Douglas Larry Whitney

December 6, 1942 — August 21, 2017

Doug passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, August 21, 2017. He was born on December 6, 1942 to his parents Harvey A Whitney Jr and Vida Ann Thayne. He was the baby brother to four sisters: Shirley Nibley, Thelma Bunker, Faye Austin, all who have passed on and one living sister JoAnn Davis. He was raised in Mapleton and Springville,
Doug graduated from Springville High School and Utah Valley Technical College. Doug met the love of his life Diane Henrie just before she graduated from high school. They were married on July 19, 1963 in Spanish Fork Utah and later they were sealed in the Manti LDS Temple on May 12, 1966.
Doug was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where he was a High Priest and served in many callings. Doug and Diane served as missionaries for the Church's Bishop Storehouse for 12 years.
Doug served in the Army National Guard and was called to the Berlin Crisis. Doug met a lot of his friends while in the military.
Dad was a quiet person who listened more than talk. If we went to him for advise, he would listen to what we had to say and he would let us know what he thought about the situation/problem but would not tell us what to do—we had to make the final decision.
Dad was known as a hard worker. He taught his three children that hard work is important and make sure you do it right the first time—it saves time and money.
Doug was a heavy duty mechanic for most of his life. He had the talent of being able to fix almost everything but computers. He was a volunteer fireman for over 25 years and had to retire due to his health. Doug was the last volunteer fire chief for Springville City.
Dad had a love for animals especially his Jack Russell dog Cooper. Cooper was by dad's side the entire time as he went through months of chemotherapy and radiation. Cooper was dad's dog and Cooper let everyone know it.
He is survived by his wife Diane Henrie, one daughter Cidnee (Barton) Woolf and one son Cody Whitney, preceded in death by his daughter Jill and son Gregg Whitney. He has eight grandchildren Patrick and Daniel Whitney, Brandon (Cassidy) Jake, Jessica, Brianna, and Carson Whitney and two great granddaughters Brielle and Piper.
Doug's first love was his wife and family. He loved to spend time with his family doing whatever— fishing, camping, four wheeling, taking Sunday rides, or sitting around just talking. His second love was fishing. He loved everything about fishing.   For years he would go fishing with his friends and family at least once a week and dad always said he had a "lucky" fishing pole!
Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 28, 2017 at 11:00 am at the LDS Church 1785 E 400 S Springville, Utah. There will be a viewing held at 10 am prior to the funeral in the Relief Society Room. Family and friends may visit with the family from 6 -8 pm on Sunday, August 27, at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 E. 200 S., Springville.
Interment will be in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery and he will be laid to rest next to his son Gregg.
