Gene Ruel Averett

Gene Ruel Averett, age 93, passed away peacefully in his home on May 20, 2017 surrounded by his family. Gene was born in Springville on April 13, 1924 to Ruel B. and Grace Averett. Growing up in Springville he attended Springville High, graduating in 1942. Shortly after graduation he joined the 10th Mountain Division where he served in Italy and Germany during WWII.

Gene married Clara Bird on August 10,1944. They've enjoyed 73 years or marriage together and welcomed 4 children.

Gene spent many years coaching baseball and was a loyal Red Devil Fan. He was a master gardener who shared the fruits of his labor with his family and neighbors. Gene was a great storyteller and loved to reminisce. He always looked for the best in people and spoke kindly of others. Gene was the best Grandpa, investing time and energy making each grandchild feel loved.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, 3 sisters, a daughter in law, and 2 great grandchildren. He is survived by his beloved wife, his brother Dean, children Larry (Maria) Averett, Art Averett, Ann (Rhett) Willmore, and Lee (Cec) Averett, 15 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at the Spring Creek 4th Ward Chapel, 350 N. 400 E. A viewing will be held Monday, May 22, from 6-8:00 pm at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 E. 200 S. Springville and at the church Tuesday from 9:30-10:30 am prior to the service. Internment, Evergreen Cemetery.
