April 7, 1935 — September 26, 2015

Charles Gordon Nielson
Our loving husband, father, and grandfather Charles Gordon Nielson passed away on September 26, 2015 after a battle with leukemia.  He was born on April 7, 1935 to Ray Sheldon and Shirley Ogden Nielson.  Gordon and his sweetheart Sherel Nelson were married in the Manti Temple on April 14, 1955 and were blessed with seven sons.   This past April they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.  Dad had a full life, he served in the army in Ft. Benning, Georgia.  He was employed by Pacific States Cast Iron Pipe Co. where he worked in the pattern shop and then as a machinist.    He was a dedicated worker; he built homes and operated his own furnace company on the side.   Dad was also a volunteer firefighter for the Springville Fire Department for 21 years.   After he retired, he had his dream job of working with wood for Maple Landing Cabinets.   He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served in many capacities, including bishoprics, temple worker, and a bishop of a singles ward where he had a profound love for them.   Dad and mom were able to serve as guest service missionaries at Temple Square in Salt Lake City from 2007 - 2012 where they met many people.  Dad enjoyed talking and getting to know everyone he met, no one was a stranger to him.  One of dad's favorite things to do was going to the cabin, which he and his boys constructed.  Spending time with his family was the most important part of his life.  He especially enjoyed hiking, camping and hunting with his boys and supporting his children and grandchildren's many activities.
Gordon is survived by his wife, Sherel, his sons Stephen (Monique), Mt. Pleasant, Russell (Lorene), Springville, Brian (Joni), Spanish Fork, Jeffrey (Jana), Salem, David (Kaci), Springville, 21 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, sisters Lorna Bown, Carma Mecham Smith, brother Carl Nielson and daughter-in-law Janis Nielson.   He was preceded in death by his parents Sheldon and Shirley Nielson, father and mother-in-law Wray and Alta Nelson, brother Kent, and two sons Michael and Douglas.  The family would like to thank the staff at UVRMC for their loving care for dad.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday September 30, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in the Springville LDS Heritage Chapel, 1785 E 400 S, Springville.  Friends and family are invited to visit Tuesday evening September 29, 2015 from 6-8 p.m.  at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 E 200 S, Springville and also Wednesday morning from 9:30-10:45 a.m. at the church.   Interment will be in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery where he will receive military rights.  Condolences may be sent to the family at ww.wheelermortuaries.com.
