1937 Joseph 2017

Joseph Kay Brooks

April 24, 1937 — June 10, 2017

Joseph Kay Brooks was born in St. George, Utah to William and Juanita Brooks.  He attended Dixie College, graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah, and did graduate studies at Brigham Young University.  At age 25 he married Ida Jean Lewis Taylor in the Logan LDS Temple on June 5, 1963.
Kay’s life was defined by contentment, faith, kindness, compassion, and a genuine love and enjoyment for life and for people.   He loved his wife and five boys, their wives and children, and his great grandchild.  His grandchildren soon became his greatest joy, and he their greatest friend.  He enjoyed the outdoors:  hunting, fishing, boating, running, golfing, and camping with family and friends.
He had an exemplary career as an FBI agent.  Fluent in Spanish and Portuguese, his work took him to several locations in the U.S., as well as to Puerto Rico and Uruguay.  In spite of his many travels, Mapleton, Utah was the place he called home.
He was committed to the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout his life.  He faithfully served an LDS mission as a young man in Texas, and then six missions later in life with Ida Jean. He served cheerfully in many church callings including Scoutmaster, Bishop, Montevideo Uruguay Mission President, Buenos Aires MTC President, Uruguay Temple President, Executive Secretary to the Area President in Chile and many others.  His simple and kind service was felt everywhere his work and church callings took him. His missionaries from the Uruguay, Montevideo Mission and his many friends from South America were precious to him.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years Ida Jean, his boys Brian (Julene) of Kennewick, WA; Brad (Sara) of Marysville, WA; Brent (Julie) of Gilbert, AZ; Benjamin (Diane) of Marietta, GA; and Brandon (Rachelle) of Springville, UT; 20 grandchildren, and one great grandchild.  He is also survived by his brother Antone (Janet) and sister Willa (Tad) Derrick.  His parents and six brothers preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 17th at 11:00 am at Mapleton LDS Stake Center, 970 North 400 East in Mapleton, Utah.  Viewings will be held Friday June 16th from 6:00-8:00 pm at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 East 200 South in Springville, Utah and prior to services on Saturday from 9:30-10:30 am at the Mapleton LDS Stake Center. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery in Springville.
The family would like to express deep appreciation to neighbors and friends who showed up with their gloves on for Kay in sickness and in health. Thanks also to the staff at The Ashford Memory Care Center who so lovingly cared for Kay as Alzheimer’s progressed.  And to Hal, who took him for so many Pepsi's.
