Lorna (Brake) Hoagland

March 27, 1930 — September 26, 2016

Lorna Brake Hoagland, loving mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, died September 26, 2016 due to complications from a fall in her Springville home.  The last week of her journey on Earth was fought at UVRMC, Provo, Utah, surrounded by family and friends.  She received excellent care by the competent and caring medical staff; especially her nurses.
Lorna was born to Luther Garland Brake and Lila Gale Brake on March 27, 1930 at home in Springville, Utah, the third of six children.  She had a happy childhood roaming the hills and creeks around Mapleton, Hobble Creek Canyon and Spanish Fork Canyon.  The family moved to Provo, Utah in 1944.  Her high school years at Lincoln High School in Orem, Utah were filled with excellent academics, service and the development of wonderful lifelong friends.  Her considerable English grammar and composition skills were put to use as editor of the school paper.  Graduating a year early in 1947, Lorna then attended Brigham Young University where she met Elmo Hoagland.  They married in 1948 in Provo, Utah and were later sealed to each other for eternity in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Their union was blessed with six children that thereafter blessed her life with 26 grandchildren, 76 great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild.  She took a very personal interest in each one and showed her boundless love in many meaningful ways that included never forgetting to send a “Grandma per$onalized” birthday card.  She loved spending time with her family.  The many written memories from her family and friends frequently use the words, accepting, loving, and nonjudgmental to characterize the way she treated all of her loved ones.  As her health declined and she became increasingly homebound, she relished visitors – particularly when they were accompanied by children.
In 1966, Lorna went to work in the Orem, Utah manufacturing facility of Signetics, an early pioneer in the integrated circuit industry.  Her intelligence, integrity, and leadership talents encouraged employees to do their best and she rose quickly from fabrication line worker, to supervision, and on into management.  She worked for Signetics until she retired in 1992
Besides her love for family, she was an excellent seamstress and blessed generations of family with that skill.  At Christmas everyone enjoyed her delicious homemade candy.  She loved camping with its Dutch oven meals, treasure hunts, and songs and stories around the campfire.  Lorna loved observing nature in general, but her favorite was birdwatching; which led to an array of bird feeders spread around her yard, the best pair of binoculars money could buy, and large bags of bird seed in her backyard shed.  She took any opportunity to teach her grandchildren about birds if they were interested.
She was a faithful member of the LDS Church and a dedicated temple worker until her physical limitations interrupted it.  Even then, she continued to do her best to help and preserve the connection with the preceding generations by doing genealogy and compiling family histories.
She is preceded in death by her dear husband Elmo, her eldest son Jon, her parents, three sisters; Nadine, JoAnn, Mary and brother, Darrell.  She is survived, and will be greatly missed by her brother, Lynn (Katherine) Brake and her remaining five children; Gayle (Mike) Corrigan, Gerry (Elaine) Hoagland, Pam (Allen) Willden, Brian (Pamela) Hoagland, Jinnene (Mike) Ward, and three generations of children.
Funeral services will be Monday, October 3, 2016 at 2 p.m. at the LDS Chapel at 495 S Canyon Road, Springville, Utah.  Friends may call during the viewings Sunday, October 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 E 200 S, Springville, Utah; or prior to the Funeral on Monday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the chapel listed above.  Interment will be in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery immediately following the funeral services.  Condolences may be sent at www.wheelermortuaries.com
