1931 Martha 2017

Martha Lee (Elkin) Veech

September 13, 1931 — March 21, 2017

Martha Lee Elkin Veech, 85, of Springville, Utah passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, March 21, 2017.  Martha was born to Ronald Earl Elkin Sr. and Leona Pearl Freeman on September 13, 1931 as the only girl between two brothers. She married Everett Richard Veech, March 17, 1951 (St. Patrick's Day) in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Martha had planned to become a nurse, but the Korean war called Richard as a draftee and hastened their marriage. She dedicated her life as a wife and mother, an adventure that sent the city girl moving countless times across the Midwest to end up mending electric fences, gathering eggs and chasing bulls on the Veech family farm. Her talents encompassed anything she laid her hand to, including sewing, music, music arrangement, canning, gardening, writing, knitting, embroidery, crafting, and cross stitch. Many of her cross stitch are spread through the homes of her friends and family as they were her traditional gift at a wedding.

Martha was born to the Methodist faith where she sang for weddings and organized and directed a Junior Choir. As a convert to the LDS Church she served in the Primary, Young Womens, and Relief Society. Though she always declared she made a better Indian than a chief, she served twice as the Relief Society President and helped to write and direct – both music and script - for the roadshows of her day. She also taught the local devotionals for 20 years in Community Church in Cerro Gordo. When a new pastor realized a Mormon was teaching, she would be replaced for a couple of lessons until popular vote called her back. She was a temple worker in Chicago, Dallas, Oklahoma City, and Provo.

Martha is survived by her husband, Richard Veech; five children, Linda (Gary) Hjorth of Payson, Ut, Philip (Joanne) of Ava, Mo., Vicki (Paul) Wheeler and Deann (Karl) Roylance , both of Springville, Ut, and Stephen (SaraLyn) Veech of Kinsport, Tn.; 3 sisters-in-law Marilyn Pope Elkin Mayes, Carol McNaulty Elkin Gwilliams and Janet Veech Hays; 21 grandchildren, and 34 great grandchildren. She was proceeded in death by her parents and two brothers, Ronald Earl Elkin Jr. and James Freeman Elkin.

Funeral services will be held Saturday March 25, 2017 at 11 a.m. in the Springville Third Ward Chapel, 355 East Center St, Springville, UT. Viewings will be held Friday, March 24, 2017 at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 East 200 South, Springville, from 6 – 8 pm and Saturday, one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in the Springville Historic City Cemetery. Condolences may be offered at www.wheelermortuaries.com.
