Welcome to the memorial page for

Sylvia Ann (Storey) Bennett

April 9, 1931 ~ December 15, 2017 (age 86)

Sylvia Ann Storey Lowe Bennett, age 86, passed away peacefully at home December 15, 2017 with her sweet companion by her side.  Sylvia was born April 9, 1931, the youngest child of Frank and Sylvia Storey, joining sister Audrey (Barker) and brother Richard (Loretta). Sylvia grew up in Kansas City, Missouri and graduated from Central High School. She married returning WWII veteran James Lowe in 1949. They enjoyed a happy and harmonious 24-year union even after the addition of their four children. Bruce (Kathy) Lowe, Brian Lowe (deceased), Brett (JaNay) Lowe and Sylvia (Greg) Cram.

While raising her young family, Sylvia pursued her two passions: education and genealogy.  She earned dual master’s degrees in education and taught elementary education in the Independence Missouri School district for many years. When asked, she always said that fourth grade was her favorite.

Sylvia had long desired to move to Utah where she could more easily pursue her love of genealogy research. Following Jim’s death, she relocated to Provo, Utah and began teaching in the Alpine School District. Her neighbor arranged a date with Reed Bennett, which both agreed to with reservations. However, six months later they were married on December 16, 1977. They spent 40 years, save 1 day, in devoted service to each other, their family and their faith. Together they served five missions taking them to lands near (Des Moines, Las Vegas) and far (Ecuador, London).

Sylvia’s passion for genealogy consumed her free time, she was not one to sit idle. It was not unusual for family vacations to include ‘brief’ stops at some out of the way county office to research through the microfiche film or to an obscure cemetery all in the pursuit of a missing ancestral family member. She freely shared her expertise with others by serving at multiple family history centers, teaching, indexing and developing programs to help others complete their family research. She attended the temple weekly, dutifully completing the work for the countless family members she had located. Her welcome home was likely ‘standing room only’ as those grateful ancestors awaited her return so they could thank her for her devoted service.

Sylvia was tireless in her service of her family and was truly happiest when surrounded by them. With her marriage to Reed, that family more than doubled in size, fun and love. Family dinners were open to all.  Competitive and fun-filled games always followed: Croquet, Scrabble, Domino’s or Skip Bo were favorites. She could always be found with a crossword puzzle or word find book at her side.

Sylvia is survived by her loving husband Reed, her sister, children (Bruce, Brett and Sylvia) and her beloved bonus children (Gay McHargue, Clyde Bennett (deceased) and Myron Bennett).  Grandchildren: Tania (Jared), Krysten (Rob), Aaron (Caroline), Nathan (Krista), Tara (Cameron), Joshua (Kristin), Kendra (Aaron), Brian (Colleen), Jason, Jeremy, Andrea (Patrick), Austin, Alex, Adam (Shineah), Ashlee (Brandon), Jeremy (Misa), Jacoby (Heather), Casey (Emma), Journey as well as 25 bonus grandchildren she adored. Together they had a combined total of 44 grandchildren, 56 great grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren.

A public viewing will be held at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 E 200 S, Springville, Utah on Thursday December 21st from 6-8 pm. Funeral services will be held December 22nd, 1 pm with a viewing from 11:45-12:45. in the Springville 9th Ward building, 878 West Center Street, Springville, Utah.  Interment will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in Mapleton, Utah.
