Wilma Nettie Tanner

August 23, 1925 — January 14, 2017

Wilma Nettie Tanner, 91, of Springville, Utah, passed away peacefully from issue due to cancer on Saturday, January 14, 2017 surrounded by her children and grandchildren.Born on August 23rd, 1925 in Roger Mills county near Moorewood Oklahoma, she was the daughter of the late Enoch Graham Roberts and Elizabeth Ann Rose.

While working as a waitress in Florence Colorado, Wilma Nettie met truck driver Willard Leo (Lee) Norris. They began their twenty year marriage in 1944. Lee had two children from a previous marriage. The daughter Jessie Louise Aitken was six months old when Wilma Nettie and Lee married. Wilma and Jessie became mother and daughter from that time forth. While married with Lee, Wilma gave birth to two children, James Edward Norris and Wilma Lea Tanner.

On August 23rd, 1957, Wilma was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She has told stories of battles she fought to defend her faith in Jesus Christ. It was not an easy road, yet for her it was the most significant decision she made in life.

During the summer of 1962 Dale Louis Tanner helped with the grounds of the LDS Church in Pueblo Colorado. He and Wilma met and attended a church dance. They were soon married and were sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple on November 21, 1965. Wilma Lea Tanner and Michael Tanner were sealed to them at that time. Julia Ann (Tanner) Haines was born on September 29, 1967.

Wilma became a widow with the death of Dale Louis Tanner on March 29, 1968. Since this time Wilma worked hard as a single parent mother in the raising of her five children. She provided for her family by working hard, whether as a big rig truck driver or as a jewelry store manager. She leaves a legacy of enduring through adversity to build a beautiful family.

In 1989 Wilma served a full time LDS Church mission in West Virginia. This joy filled adventure began with a road trip from Provo Utah to West Virginia with Priscilla Haines, the mother of Wilma’s new son in law Brent Haines. Priscilla acted as Wilma’s mission companion and travel buddy. This road trip was the start of a life time friendship that grew richer through the years. The rich experiences of teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the people of West Virginia strengthened Wilma’s testimony and provided many wonderful experiences.

Whether riding a ferry boat, a train or simply riding in a car, Wilma loved watching the world around her and seeing the glorious creations of her Father in Heaven.  She loved spending time visiting with family and friends and occasionally playing Skipbo.

Wilma is survived by her brothers Dale Roberts and Don Roberts, and her children Jessie Louise Aitken, James Edward Norris, Wilma Lee (Tanner) Eppich, Michael Raymond Tanner, Julia Ann (Tanner) Haines, 13 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and spouses. She is preceded in death by her sister Roseann Roberts and her husband Dale Louis Tanner.

The family will receive friends and relatives for a viewing 6 PM to 8 PM on January 16, 2017 at the Wheeler Mortuary (82 West 400 North) in Mapleton, Utah. Funeral services begin at 1:00 PM on Tuesday January 17, 2017, with a viewing beginning 1 hour prior to funeral services, at the LDS Chapel on 878 West Center in Springville, Utah.

She will be interred in the Mapleton Utah Cemetery.
