James Norman Graves

May 30, 1928 — July 6, 2017

James Norman Graves returned to his heavenly home surrounded by his family on Thursday, July 6, 2017. He was born on May 30, 1928, the second youngest of six children to James Henry and Edna Rosella Hadfield Graves.

He was married to his sweetheart, Lois Aileen Brereton, on March 31, 1948, in the Salt Lake Temple. They are the parents of seven children: daughters; Kathleen (Roy Evans), Susan (Lee Palmer); sons; David (Shellie), Richard (LaRayne), Robert (Cindy), Michael (Sann), and Bryan (Julie). They have 37 grandchildren, 83 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, five siblings; LaVera (Elmo Curtis), Floyd (Velma Dallin), Thelma (Rex Stewart), Emma (Dean Mason), and Ronald. Also, Jeremy Evans (grandson) and Crue Stephen Crandall (great-grandson). He is survived by his wife, Lois, Shirley Bramall Graves (wife of Ronald), as well as a large posterity.

Much of Norman’s life was spent in construction. He founded Graves Heating and Building over 64 years ago where he worked until the day he passed away. When he wasn’t building homes he was helping build character in those with whom he associated.

Norman was an example of family dedication, diligence, and had a tireless work ethic. He was also loving, kind, generous, and was always looking for an opportunity to serve those around him. He was dearly loved by all who knew him, and will be greatly missed.

Norman served in many church positions, including the first Bishop of the Mapleton 3rd Ward, MTC branch president, and was a missionary with his wife in the Nauvoo, IL. He was also active in the community serving with the Mapleton Fire Department, was a member of the Mapleton City Council, and was the Mayor of Mapleton in 1974.

A viewing will be held Sunday, July 9, 2017, at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 East 200 South, Springville, UT from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be 11:00 am, Monday, July 10, 2017 at the Hobble Creek Stake Center, 495 South Canyon Road, Springville, UT with a viewing at the church prior to services Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 am.
