Janice Ellen (Berndt) Manges

Janice Ellen Berndt Manges - 70, passed away unexpectedly at 10:45 p.m. Tuesday, October 15, 2019, with her sweetheart of more than 50 years, Thomas, by her side.

Janice was born May 30, 1949 to Eugene and Viola Berndt in South Bend, Indiana. She was the youngest of 3 children.

She is preceded in death by her parents, son Bart Jacob Manges, sister Collette (Hank) Woolley, father-in-law Benjamin H. Jones and recently mother-in law Betty Marie Jones, father-in-law Dean Lamar Manges and mothers-in-law Barbara Manges and Constance Manges, and uncle Paul Junior Bailey. Janice is survived by her kind and gentle husband Dr. Thomas Dean Manges of Springville, UT, 8 children Tamara (Ed) Selee of Dallas, TX, Jill (Mike) Hasleton of Pleasant Grove, UT, Barry (Jennifer) Manges of Pleasant Grove, UT, Anita (Robert) Anderton of Springville, UT, Brad Manges of Idaho Falls, ID, Adam (Jennifer) Manges of Lehi, UT, Alex (Mandy) Manges of Spanish Fork, UT, and Tara (Chris) Nicewander of Hutchinson, KS; 36 grandchildren Jonathan (Bayley) Selee of Carrollton, TX, Dillon (Jessica) Selee, of Tulsa, OK, Ryan Selee, of Pleasant Grove, UT, Carson Selee of Dallas, TX, Jared (Kelsie) Hasleton of Springville, UT, Brittney Hasleton of Pleasant Grove, UT, Emily (Dallin) Cahoon of Salt Lake City, UT, Aurin Manges of Orem, UT, Stockton Manges of Ivory Coast, Africa, Kimee Manges, Taylor (Kristen) of Provo, UT, Shelby and Brandon Griffiths of Pleasant Grove, UT, Bryan, Jacob, McKenna, Kenneth, Jessica, Victoria, Hunter, Kyle, Eric, Haylie, and Elysia Anderton, of Springville, UT, Hayden, Emmitt, and Violet Manges of Idaho Falls, Caleb, Kendyle, Clyde, and Keith Manges of Lehi, Utah, Weston and Ethan Manges of Spanish Fork, UT, and Marcus and Lakin Thiel, and Madison Nicewander of Hutchingson, KS; and 3 great grandchildren, Daniel Selee, Olivia Hasleton, and Mason Selee; her brother Phil (Darlene) Berndt of South Bend, Indiana, brothers and sisters-in-law Hank Woolley of Vandalia, MI, David (Rosie) Manges of Fayetville, PA, Jack (Polly) Manges of Bremen, IN, Steven (Susie) Manges of South Bend, IN, Diane (Craig) Cummins of Mishawaka, IN, and Paul (Irene) Jones of Stevensville, MI; She is also survived by her great aunts Nancy Bailey of Lake of the Woods, Bremen, IN, and Barbara Bailey of Plymouth, IN, and many much loved nieces, nephews, and other family members.

Janice attended Riley High School in South Bend, Indiana, where she met her sweetheart in Spanish class. She only took a few classes her senior year of high school and instead worked. Although they did not date in high school, Janice and Thomas once met up at a sock hop, then after graduation, they dated and were married 2 years later on August 9, 1969. On August 9, 1974 they were baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. One year later on August 9, 1975, they were sealed together for time and all eternity in the Oakland, California Temple. She attended Indiana University in Bloomington, IN and received her Associates Degree in Optometry. Janice faithfully served in family, church, school, and neighborhoods with a willing heart and a happy attitude. She never liked to say goodbye to friends, but was eager to make new ones everywhere she went. One of her mottos was, "Always room for one more friend." She meant it and she lived it. She lived in at least 11 different neighborhoods, cities, and countries due to her husband being an officer in the United States Air Force, retiring, and finally settling down. Her greatest love was family. Although having traveled most of the United States, some of Canada and Mexico, and many countries in Europe, her favorite vacations were always those where she was visiting family. She beamed with pride and joy as she watched her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren grow and succeed in life. She planned thoughtful and fun outings with her children, such as ice skating, horseback riding, going to the beach, 5k walks through the forests of Germany, and camping throughout Europe and the United States. During her life she enjoyed being on a sailboat with her husband and children, owning and operating a bookstore, she loved spending time with family and friends, she loved music, reading, learning, taking photos, shopping, nature, and exploring new places. Her artistic abilities were something to be admired. She could paint beautiful water colors and oil paintings, but was also a master at crafts, from cake decorating to home decor projects, she was good at every project she tried. She was a great cook, creating heartwarming dishes that soothed the needy soul. Most of all, Janice loved to sit and laugh with her family and friends for hours while reminiscing about the past and dreaming of the future.

She will be missed and she will be fondly remembered as one who lovingly took in, as family, the lost and lonely who crossed her path.

Please come celebrate the life well lived of this loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 2, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the LDS Chapel located at 672 North 250 West in Springville, UT. There will be a visitation held from 10:00 a.m.-10:45 a.m. prior to the services.
