LaVonne Joyce (Dugan) Hales

November 14, 1934 — July 5, 2017

LaVonne Joyce Dugan Hales, beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and loyal friend, passed away on July 5 at the age of 82.

She was born November 14, 1934 to Roy William Dugan and Irene Parrott Dugan in Scottsbluff, Nebraska - the first of three children.

LaVonne was a happy child who loved helping others. She yearned to become a nurse like her mother, and attended St. Elizabeth’s School of Nursing in Yakima, Washington after completing high school in her cherished hometown of Sunnyside.

While attending nursing school, LaVonne met and dated Blaine Davis Hales. They were married in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho on Oct. 2 1954. LaVonne joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the fall of 1955 and the couple’s marriage was solemnized in the Los Angeles Temple on November 15, 1961.

Blaine and LaVonne eventually settled their family in Mapleton, Utah, where she reared their five children. She was a dedicated mother and devoted partner. Her family was the most important thing in her life. Homemaking, interior design, teaching and nurturing came naturally to LaVonne and her happiest times were spent gathered with loved ones. She will be remembered as a warm and welcoming hostess with a friendly smile, contagious laugh, and love for board games.

LaVonne had many Christ-like qualities which were manifested in a lifetime of love and service to her family, friends and community. She was actively involved in her religion, faithfully serving in numerous callings, including ward and stake Young Women and Relief Society auxiliaries.

She is survived by her husband, Blaine of Mapleton; her children: Carrie (Edward Carlson) of Mesa, AZ, Blaine (Sue Andrus) of Spanish Fork, Ren (Brenda Bailey) of Mapleton, Shauna (Troy Allred) of Richland, WA, and Kent (Jana Strange) of Sierra Vista, AZ; 20 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Randy; parents, Roy and Irene; sister, Sharon Lane; and brother, Larry Dugan.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 14 at 11:00 AM at the LDS Chapel on 475 North 1600 West, Mapleton, Utah.  Viewings will be held Thursday, July 13 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Mapleton Wheeler Mortuary at 82 West 400 North, and on Friday morning prior to the funeral from 10:00 – 10:45 AM at the church. Burial will be in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery.
