Lucille (Best) Houser

December 3, 1949 — April 16, 2019

Lucille Best Houser was born to Alfred Quintin and Gladys Dial Best on December 13, 1949.     She passed away peacefully on April 16, 2019 after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease and dementia.  Her family finds comfort in the fact her body and mind are no longer plagued with the things that robbed her of doing what she loved.

Lucille had fond memories of her childhood.  She was the third of eleven children. She had endless stories of spending time with her parents, brothers, and sisters. She loved to pull pranks (this did not ever change), enjoyed long road trips to California, the beach, and throwing tomatoes at cars.

Lucille graduated from Jordan High School.  She was a proud Beet-digger and served as the Student Body Secretary. She attended the University of Utah where she met her eternal companion. Lucille and David were married in the Salt Lake Temple on June, 18, 1971.

Lucille loved serving and doing nice things for others. Lucille was a talented seamstress, and was extremely artistic and crafty. She used these talents to make countless gifts for others, many of which we still treasure. Lucille devoted her life helping those in need.  As a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, she was blessed with many opportunities to serve through her callings in the Primary, Young Women, and Relief Society.  She also loved the temple and served for many years as an ordinance worker. She relished these opportunities and often went above and beyond the call of duty. Even as her health declined, she continued to find opportunities to serve others.

Lucille loved her job as a secretary and substitute teacher at Springville High School.  Although she graduated as a Beetdigger, she adopted the Red Devil mascot as her own.  She loved the students and thoroughly enjoyed her time with them.  She had a knack for recognizing students who were struggling and was always quick to offer whatever additional help and support she could.

Lucille also loved to read, travel across the country to pharmacy conventions with Dave, and shop. She was extremely good at combining the three for optimal fun and relaxation. She had an uncanny ability for finding the best pair of shoes. She also attended book club for decades and enjoyed spending that time with lifelong friends.

Most of all, Lucille loved being a wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved spending time with her family and orchestrated several fun family vacations. She spent countless hours playing (and winning) games. Lucille was a master at playing jacks and pick up sticks. She also thoroughly enjoyed attending piano recitals, sporting events and performances of all kinds.  Nothing brought her more happiness than seeing her children and grandchildren experience joy and success.  She was always their biggest cheerleader and number one fan.

Although her disease robbed her of many things, it did not rob her of her spunkiness and sense of humor.  She kept everyone in stitches right up to the end of her life, always bringing a smile to our faces. We will miss her.

Lucille is survived by her husband, David, of 47 years. She is also survived by her five children and twelve grandchildren; Jonathan (Sarah) Houser, Zachary (Amie) Houser (Sebrina, Joshua, Amelia, Caleb), Jacob (Kristy) Houser (Sean, Luke), Sophia (Steve) Child (Alexa, Lucy, Ella, Clara), Vanessa (Dave) Moody (Aspen, Gavin), and her siblings; Linnita Proctor, Phyllis Smith, Bonnie Smith, Darrell Best, Suzanne Thacker, Brent Best, Kent Best, Douglas Best, Amy Mayeda, and Natalie Cline.  She is preceded in death by her parents.

The family would like to thank the loving staff at the Ashford for their dedicated care of Lucille. In addition, the children would like to express gratitude to our dad for his unwavering care, love, and devotion to our mom, especially during these last several extremely difficult years.
