Lynn Lamont Bateman Jr.

December 29, 1936 — October 19, 2017

Dr. Lynn Lamont Bateman Jr. - "Mont" or "Doc" as he was affectionately called by his family and friends passed away peacefully with Joan, his wife of 57 years, at his side. Lynn was joyfully reunited with his daughter Melissa and his son Matthew on the morning of October 19, 2017 after a noble and courageous decade long fight against Leukemia. Doc was 80 years old.
Lynn, son of Lynn Lamont Bateman, Sr. and Helen Louise Schmidt, a daughter of German converts to the LDS Church and immigrants to the United States, was born December 29,1936. Lynn grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah enjoying outdoor activities with his father Lynn Sr. who took him fishing, camping and hunting at a very early age. Over the course of his life, this passion for the outdoors fueled numerous experiences and outdoor adventures with those he loved. Beginning with his father and extending to his family and friends, Lynn was a true adventurer who created memories that will live on for numerous generations of family.
After his father's untimely death in 1951, Lynn moved to Panguitch, Utah upon his mother's marriage to Lars W. Peterson and then shortly thereafter to Spanish Fork, Utah. His new step-father introduced Lynn to a new lifelong passion - ranching in Boulder, Utah. Beginning in High School Lynn and his dear friend Congressman Wayne Owens ran cattle and horses in the wilds of southern Utah which ultimately led to a family ranch at the base of Sugarloaf Mountain in Boulder. Lynn transferred his love of the red and white sandstone hills of Boulder to his children, grandchildren and friends alike. Memories of fishing, hunting, camping and numerous other grand adventures in southern Utah are a legacy that will be enjoyed, not only by his immediate family members, but also by many future generations of his posterity.
Lynn attended Granite High School in Salt Lake City, Utah as a sophomore, Panguitch High School as a junior and Spanish Fork High School as a senior. Lynn then attended BYU until leaving to serve an LDS mission to Western Canada from 1957 to 1959. Upon his return, he married his high school sweetheart, Joan Pace, of Spanish Fork, Utah in the Salt Lake Temple on June 6, 1960. They moved to Salt Lake City where Lynn attended the University of Utah Medical School. After graduation, they lived in Dallas, Texas, where Lynn did his internship and internal medicine residency at Parkland Hospital. Lynn was inducted into the Air Force and was stationed in Denver, Colorado for two years where he served as a medical doctor and helped establish the government five point program for people in need of government assistance.
After serving his country for two years, Lynn and his family moved to Salt Lake City for another two years of residency. Upon completion of his residency, Lynn established his Internal Medicine Practice in Provo, Utah where he joined the Medical Staff at Utah Valley Hospital in 1969 and served for 44 years before his retirement in 2013. During his career, he served as Internal Medicine Education Director and assisted in starting the first Intensive Care Unit at the hospital. Because of additional training he received, Dr. Bateman also began performing and reading EEG's and pulmonary function tests before there were any intensivists, pulmonologists or neurologists at the hospital.
Doc practiced medicine like he lived every facet of his life - with joy. He loved medicine and enjoyed every day he had the opportunity to serve and care for his patients who he considered to be a part of his extended family. For the last seven years of his career he continued to faithfully serve his patients even as he battled leukemia.
Ranching and farming were important to Lynn so after starting his medical practice in Provo, Utah he found the place of his dreams in Mapleton, Utah where he raised his family and lived at the time of his passing. He was a devoted and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For 27 years he was the doctor for the LDS General Authorities at General Conference. As Bishop Bateman, Lynn positively impacted countless families, especially the youth. Lynn loved the youth and took a personal interest in serving and mentoring them.
Lynn's service extended overseas with a church and medical mission that he and Joan served in Samoa. He wrote and initiated a grant for medical supplies to help those who suffered from rheumatic fever in Samoa. Lynn and Joan's efforts were the catalyst for Doctor Marv and Dr. Lori Allen's Rheumatic Rescue that is blessing the lives of thousands of Samoans today.
Lynn was a devoted and loving husband who nurtured his life long love affair with his bride Joan everyday. He fostered and celebrated Joan's love of art with travels around the world to see the works of the great Masters. But he always let family and friends know that the greatest masterpieces of his life were not just Joan's paintings but the family that they had raised and nurtured together.
Lynn was a man of great passion for life. The diversity of his interests and curiosity seemed to have no bounds. He loved the outdoors, but it did not end there. He loved travel, the arts, theatre, great food, fly tying, falconry, woodworking, leatherwork, great books that expanded his horizons, model airplanes, great music (especially the cowboy oldies), and animals of all kinds. His favorite golden retriever Frosty and his trusty palomino horse Susie became family legends that set a high standard for all future family pets.
Lynn is survived by his wife Joan; five children and their spouses, Brad (Kathy) Bateman, Jeff (Tammy) Bateman, Arianne (David) Nemelka, Kristen (Mathew) Evans, Alese (David) Elkington,; 21 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren and one sibling Kathleen Rae Bateman.
He was preceded in death by two children Melissa Eliza Bateman and Matthew Phillip Bateman, two grandchildren, David Matthew Elkington and Theodore Lynn Nemelka and Lynn's parents.
