R. Kent Miner

April 28, 1929 — September 18, 2017

R. Kent Miner, age 88, passed away from causes incident to age on Monday, September 18, 2017 at his home in Highland, Utah.  He was born April 28, 1929 in Springville, Utah to Alma Miner and Cleonda Roylance Miner. Kent spent his growing up years in Springville, graduating from Springville High School in 1947. He was active in sports, especially high school basketball where he’ll always be remembered for his half-court shot at the buzzer to make the game winning basket.  People mention the shot to this day.  He served an LDS mission to Australia and upon returning met Virginia Lee Webb at Garrett Trucking where both worked. They married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 3, 1953. He attended Brigham Young University before serving 2 years in the Army stationed in Puerto Rico during the Korean War.
Kent started his career in 1958 with Metropolitan Life Insurance in Cedar City, Utah. He and Virginia spent many years working and raising their family in Washington and Oregon before moving back to Utah in 1974.
He was active in the LDS church serving as Bishop, High Councilor, and in an MTC branch presidency. He and Virginia were called to serve in the Visitors Center at the Mesa, Arizona Temple in 1998.
He is survived by his children, Desiree M Cannon (Scott) of Mendon, UT; Raquel M Prestwich (Craig) of Highland, UT; and Daniel R. Miner (Tanya) of Santaquin, UT. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 1 sister: Joan Fox.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Virginia, and son Matthew Kent Miner. Also by sisters Beverly White, Almah Merrill, Jean Fox, and brother Larry Miner.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 23, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the Highland LDS Ward Chapel at 11162 North Alpine Highway, Highland, Utah. There will be a viewing on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wheeler Mortuary 211 East 200 South in Springville and at the church on Saturday one hour prior to the services.
