Robert Johnson Sumsion

October 24, 1925 — August 26, 2019

A piece of our hearts now lives in heaven as our beloved husband, dad, and grandpa, Robert Johnson Sumsion, returned home on August 26, 2019, at the age of 93.

Robert was born October 24, 1925 in Logan, Utah to Glen W. Sumsion and Clara Johnson.  He was reared in Springville and his roots run deep in the Springville community.  He will be missed by many, particularly his family who loved and cherished him deeply.

He graduated from Springville High School in 1943, but also prized his informal education provided by his summers spent on his Grandpa Sumsion’s ranch in Hobble Creek Canyon.  The work was hard, but there was time for fun. He loved fishing and he would often say there were so many fish “you had to hide behind a tree to bait your fishing hook.”

Graduation from high school brought with it military service in World War II.  At the end of the war, Robert was stationed in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia.  He was released from the army in May 1946.

His college education spanned a decade, having been interrupted by his military service and a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to West Virginia and Kentucky.

He received his bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University in 1952, and then entered the University of Utah law school.  During this time, his brother Richard was serving a mission where he taught Naomi Rose Bussing of Batavia, New York.  This contact culminated in the happy event of Robert’s marriage to Naomi in October 1954.  He was smitten.

Employment opportunities with Texaco Oil Company took Robert and Naomi to Denver, Colorado and then to Bismarck, North Dakota.

He then received an invitation from his father to practice law with him, which brought our family back to Springville.  Robert worked along side his father as the Springville City Attorney.  After his father’s untimely death, he formed a law partnership with Boyd L. Park under the firm name of Sumsion and Park.

In 1978, the Governor of the State of Utah appointed him to be a State Circuit Court Judge where he served for fifteen years.

Robert and Naomi accepted a call in 1992 to serve a church mission in London, England.  Robert said the greatest thing experienced on their mission was each other and learning what they could accomplish together with the blessing of the Lord in their lives.

After returning from their mission, Robert and Naomi became ordinance workers in the Provo, Utah Temple where they served for nearly twenty years.

We will miss our husband and father’s gentle spirit, his big heart, his knowledge, kindness, expertise, advice, and his unconditional love.  We love you, Sumsh.

Robert is survived by his wife: Naomi; children: Sue Davis (Sheldon), Bill (Lynette), and Bob (Rochelle); brother, Richard (LaPrele); Thirteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.  Robert was preceded in death by his daughter, Ann, his brother, Owen, and his parents.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 30, 2019 at 11 a.m. in the chapel located at 355 East Center Street Springville, Utah. A viewing for friends and family will be held Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wheeler Mortuary located at 211 East 200 South in Springville, and just prior to the service from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.  Burial will be in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery.
