Carl Hatten Carpenter, 94, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones in his home in Springville, Utah, on June 14, 2026.
Carl was born on February 4, 1932 in Manti, Utah, to Joseph Gerald Carpenter and Mary Koch Carpenter. He was proud of his heritage and loved growing up under the shadow of the Manti Temple. He was an all-American boy who loved playing baseball, and went on to play on the Snow College team while he was a student there from 1950 to 1952.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954, where he was assigned to the Intelligence and Reconnaissance Platoon of the 19th Infantry Regiment. He was honorably discharged with the rank of staff sergeant.
After completing his military service, he began attending Utah State University in Logan, Utah, where he received a degree in Civil Engineering in 1956. He went on to have a distinguished 42-year career as a civil engineer and hydrologist, and was recognized by his peers as Utah Engineer of the Year in 1998. He retired from Provo City’s Department of Water and Wastewater in 1997.
While attending Utah State, he began courting Marcia Jane Tuttle while carpooling from Manti to Salt Lake City, where she was training as a nurse. They were married in the Manti Temple on September 16, 1955, and enjoyed 70 years of marriage together. They moved to Springville in 1965, where they made their family home for 61 years.
Carl was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many callings throughout his life, including as a bishop, and later counselor in two Springville stake presidencies. His greatest joy was being in the temple, where he served as a sealer for 20 years in the Provo (Rock Canyon) Temple and later Provo City Center Temple. He was blessed to perform the sealing ceremony for many of his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Marcia; children Randall Carpenter, Douglas Carpenter (Kathia), Charlotte McDermott, Helen Richardson (Tim), and Gerald Carpenter (Michelle); and brother Gerald Arthur Carpenter. He was proud of his large family, which included 21 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his older siblings, Julie, Robert, Ruth, Evelyn, and June.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at 10:00 AM at the Springville, Utah LDS chapel located at 1785 East 400 South, Springville, Utah. A viewing will be held prior to the services at 9:00 AM. Interment will be at 4:00 PM at the Manti City Cemetery.
