Listen to Obituary

Chris Laird Mecham, son of Carl LaMont Mecham and Dorothy Laird Mecham, passed away peacefully on Thanksgiving Day after a fierce battle with pancreatic cancer.

The Mecham family invites all who knew and loved Chris to join them in celebrating and memorializing his life.

There will be a public viewing at Wheeler Mortuary in Springville on Wednesday, December 3, from 6-8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at the Hobble Creek Stake Center (555 Averette Avenue in Springville) on Thursday, December 4th at 11am. A public viewing will precede the services from 9:30 to 10:30.

Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.

Chris was born in Provo on January 6, 1960. The fourth of five children. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers David and Gary and his sister Michelle.

He leaves behind his devoted sister Anette, his angel wife Rozlin, his beloved children CJ and his wife Brigette, Casey and his wife Kim, Andrew and his wife Tayci, Phillip and his wife Shauna, and Caitlin and her husband Will, as well as his greatest joy; his 18 grandchildren whom he loves dearly.

In his youth, Chris was an exemplary athlete, earning countless awards and honors for his prowess and leadership on courts and fields.

He learned many important lessons from his time playing sports, particularly that you have people rooting for you, people rooting against you, and teammates counting on you to do your best.

This is why he always held himself to the highest standards of sportsmanship; teaching honor and respect to his children as he exemplified dignity and grace in victory and defeat. Ideals that serve him and his children well.

When he graduated from Springville High School in the class of 1978, he briefly played football at Snow College.

His sports career gave way to his successful career working for Geneva Rock, creating the infrastructure we depend on daily.

Chris always loved building and creating things; once, when he was a boy living in 400 North in Springville, he watched for hours as the road was torn up and repaved, becoming so annoying to the crew that they yelled at him to go home.

Chris worked for Geneva Rock for 45 years, finally retiring in December of 2024. During his career, he made many friends out of colleagues whom he wanted very much to tell how much he loves and appreciates. They made a hard job easier.

Chris met his wife, Rozlin Hurst, in 1981 at the wedding of Chris’s best friend, Mike Osborn and Rozlin’s late sister Michelle. They were drawn to each other immediately. They started dating, and very quickly it became obvious that Chris and Roz were destined for each other.

Chris, having had a rocky childhood, had previously sworn that marriage and family were things he would rather do without.

But Roz’s charms were too much for him to withstand, and they were married in Mapleton, Utah, on February 19, 1983. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Provo, Utah Temple on June 26, 2004.

While blessed with the talent for and love of building, Chris was always far greater at creating less tangible yet far more lasting things.

People matter to Chris far more than he was ever willing to say out loud. He is a master at building relationships and friendships. Chris and Roz were able to create a bond in their family far stronger than steel and far sweeter than honey.

The bond the Mecham family shares was forged through kindness, love and forgiveness through tribulation. And through the years as more and more people have been added to the family through marriage and birth the bond has only grown stronger and more lasting thanks Roz and Chris’s Christlike example.

Chris had a deep and abiding Testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He knew deeply and personally the power of the atonement of Jesus Christ and his healing power having experienced it throughout his life.

Chris served in many callings and capacities, but the one he loved most was serving in the nursery with Roz.

When Chris was diagnosed with cancer he encouraged Roz to continue serving in the temple because he knew the blessings that came from her service there.
