Laura Deon Baker Peay, known as Deon, passed awaypeacefully at her home October 19, 2023. Deon was born on March 20, 1936 at home. Mom always said “I was born in this house and I will die in this house” and she did just that, about 20 feet from where she was born.
Deon was born to James Merle Baker and Dona Elizabeth Blackett. Deon attended schools in Springville graduating from Springville High School. Few knew that mom played the drums in high school, a talent she hid from her family for most of her life. While in high school she met Karl William Peay, whom she later married. Deon and Karl were married May 21, 1954, 2 weeks shy of graduation and were married for 66 years before his passing three years ago. Mom and Dad enjoyed bowling and were very good at it. They won numerous trophies even traveling for bowling tournaments. They also had a garden that produced enough fruit and vegetables to can and feed the family through the years. Mom made the best homemade Salsa. Mom had a beautiful rose garden that she loved. Later in life mom discovered rock hunting which carried on through her kids and grandkids. Mother and Teresa joined the Timpanogos Gem and Mineral Society going on rock trips and making friends. Deon and her sister Delpha joined a pinoccle card group who would meet once a week for lunch and cards, Mom must have won a lot as we found a jar full of $1 bills where Mom stashed her weekly winnings.
One of Moms greatest accomplishments was she got to stay home until all 6 of us kids were in school before she had to work outside the home. Mom then went to work at Phoenix sewing factory until her mother got sick then she quit to take care of her Mom. Mother sewed many of our clothes as we grew up, she was quite talented in that field.
Deon is survived by her 6 children. Sons: Steven (JJ) Peay and David (Merlene) Peay. Daughters: Elizabeth (Robert) Daniels, Brenda (Phil) Casper, Teresa Peay and Nancy Shaw. 14 Grand kids, 20 Great grand kids, her younger brother John (Dot) Bakerand her cat Sally Ann . Proceeded in death by her husband Karl, granddaughter Shallynn Marie Peay, great granddaughter Alexis Joy Daniels, her parents, siblings and their spouses.
