It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Derrick L Sundquist, age 46, who passed away unexpectedly on January 17, 2026, at his home in Orem, Utah.

Derrick was born on August 22, 1979, in Provo, Utah, the second son of the late Kim V Sundquist and Donna Louise (Muller) Sundquist.

Derrick grew up in Provo-Orem. He lived his entire life in Utah County. He graduated with the inaugural class of Timpanogos High School in 1997 and continued his education at Utah Valley University. A natural salesman, Derrick quickly shifted his focus from college to pursuing a successful career in sales. His career was cut short in his early twenties when he was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 2004. This illness deeply affected his life, but never diminished his kind heart. He spent the remainder of his years navigating its challenges with resilience and courage.

In his youth, Derrick was extremely athletic and loved playing sports. He was adventurous and loved the outdoors. You would often find him off-roading in his Jeep or motorbike, or water-skiing and snowboarding. He loved camping, fishing, and spending time with his friends and family.

Derrick acquired a love for the game of chess in junior high when he joined the chess club. As his life took a different direction, chess became a meaningful and enduring focus for him. He devoted himself to the game, spending many years refining his skills. He loved playing with anyone and often watched grandmasters compete. Over the years, he became a formidable player and proudly took second place in his first chess tournament.

His other joys in life included music, movies, and going for rides, but none were greater than his daughter and granddaughter. He loved them with all that he was and was always excited to see them and share stories about their lives. His kind and loving heart will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his father, Derrick was preceded in death by his brothers Davin K Sundquist and Devin C Sundquist Sr.;his sister Kelcie Mae Sundquist; his grandparents: Augustine Victor Muller, Mona Jean (Quinn Muller) Anderson, Floyd Vivian Sundquist, and Nyla Mae (Cragun) Sundquist.

Derrick is survived by his mother; his daughter Makayla Sundquist; his granddaughter Cordelia Luna Carr; his brothers Dusty V Sundquist and Kim V Sundquist Jr.; eight nieces and four nephews.
