Elma Patrick Evans, age 96 of Springville, UT passed away on Friday, May 22, 2020 at Spring Gardens Assisted Living Center in Mapleton, UT where she’d been cared for the past 15 months.
Elma was born on January 8, 1924, the 1st of twin girls born to Lura Ann & John Hulet Patrick. She was the 5th in a family of 9 children.
Growing up the family never owned a vehicle, but they walked or rode in the wagon wherever they went. To earn money as a child, Elma cleaned houses, picked strawberries & cherries, and ironed clothing for the neighbors. Being poor, this helped provide for things she normally wouldn’t have enjoyed. Elma hated having no bathroom but only an outhouse with the Sears Catalog used for toilet paper.
Elma married Preston G. Liddiard to which they were blessed with the birth of baby girl Diane. Elma & Preston later divorced.
Elma married Wayne Harrington Evans on August 17, 1945 and they were later sealed in the LDS Salt Lake Temple on February 17, 1955. Three children were born to this marriage, Lynn, Karen & James.
Elma worked at Ironton during World War II but spent the majority of her life being a stay-at-home mother and wife. She was an excellent seamstress, glorious pie maker, gardner, cook, bowler and genealogist. She spent many years associated with the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers (DUP) in various capacities.
Elma coveted the many newer and better typewriters she owned over the years, never wanting to master the computer…. afraid of that “mouse”! But those typewriters sparked hundreds of snail-mail cards and letters to friends and family.
Elma will be remembered for her pies, spaghetti with onions, brownies, baked beans, homemade family reunion suckers and Christmas Eve parties, upholding a long-standing Patrick family tradition; her spunk and pure goodness and kindness unfeigned.
She was devoted to her parents. She and other family members devoted 4 ½ years to care for their 100 year old father after the death of their mother.
Elma was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in numerous capacities. Most notable was her service in the Provo Temple and her 20 plus year calling with the Blazer boys!! Who does that? Only our mother!
Elma is survived by her four children. Diane (Bonner) Gillies of Springville, UT; Lynn (Becky) Evans of Colfax, IA; Karen (Dennis) Jensen of Ivins, UT; James Evans of Salem, UT. She is a grandma in many ways to 30 grandchildren, 92 great grandchildren and 26 great great-grandchildren, at last count!
Elma is also survived by her twin sister, Erma Patrick Whitesides of Layton, UT, as well as numerous other family members.
A private family viewing will be held Wednesday, May 27, 2020 at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 East 200 South in Springville, from 12:00-1:30 pm. After which a private family graveside service will be held at Springville Evergreen Cemetery at 2:00 pm, where she will be buried next to her best friend and husband of 60 years, Wayne who passed away in 2005.
The family would like to thank the staff at Spring Gardens Assisted Living for the uncompromised care and love they gave our mother. You know who you are….and so do we! A special thanks to “Sam”, the Hospice nurse. You are the best and we can never thank you enough for what you’ve done for our mother and for us during these past 4 months.
And to the Springville 3rd Ward & DUP ladies, thank you for the care and friendship shown to our mother these many years.
