Mary Shaw, age 59, passed away unexpectedly at home on the morning of November 5, 2018 in Mapleton, Utah.
Mary was born in Pocatello, Idaho on September 14, 1959. She graduated from Pocatello High School, received her bachelor's degree from San Francisco State University in Speech Therapy, and received her Master's Degree in Chaplaincy from BYU. She was married to Steven W. Shaw May 16, 1982 and had four children.
Mary was born a competitor and a natural athlete. In her youth she was a diver, ran track, and a belly dancer. She excelled as a tennis player winning state in high school and playing on the BYU women's tennis team. After transferring to San Francisco State University, she continued to play tennis and qualified for Nationals where she took first place in singles tennis and third place in doubles tennis. After college she continued to teach tennis in California and Idaho eventually finishing her career as a Junior High School tennis coach.
Her career was diverse and meaningful. She began working as a wilderness survival instructor for BYU. She later served in several women's prisons and a men’s federal prison as a teacher of institute and anger management courses. Later she worked as the director of Canary Garden, a center providing counseling for grieving children and battered women. Finally, she worked as a chaplain for a hospice service.
Mary also excelled in her hobbies which included photography (winning several awards), painting, and fishing. Most of all in life she loved her husband Steven; her children Myra, Michael, Natalie, and William; and her seven grandchildren Anson, Eliza, Sage, Porter, Bronson, Mylee, and Hunter.
The viewing will be held 10:00 a.m. November 10th, at the Mapleton LDS 10th Ward Chapel located at 1068 South 1600 West, Mapleton, Utah. Funeral will be held November 10th at 11 a.m. at the same location. Condolences may be sent at www.wheelermortuaries.com
