Mickey Dee Snyder
1935-2023
Mickey Dee Snyder passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on May 9, 2023, at the age of 88.
Mickey was born in Salt Lake City, January 3, 1935 to Louis LeRoy Snyder and Ardell Eva Lamping. He was the second of four children, Ronald LeRoy (deceased), Carol Louise (deceased) and Penny Lee (Bountiful, UT)
He spent his early years in Salt Lake City, living at times with his grandparents, Eva Stroud and Peter Lamping. At the age of 8, Mickey moved with his family to El Monte, California. During that time, Mickey and his family were taught by the LDS ward missionaries about the gospel of Jesus Christ. It was then he was surprised to learn his mother was already a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After several years, Mickey, his dad, brother Ron and sister Carol were baptized members of the church. He was sixteen years old at the time. Mickey was very close to his mother and joined the church at her request. He told her if he committed it would be with “all his heart”. True to his word, Mickey remained active the rest of his life. During his high school years, Mickey played football, ran track and pole vaulted using a bamboo pole. He was a very accomplished athlete earning a number of awards, medals and all-conference selection. Mickey was a gymnast and a high diver, who would captivate the crowds with his graceful dives. Mickey loved to run and could be found on the road five to six days a week up until two years before his passing. He participated in a number of 5k, 10k, half marathon and marathon races.
While living in El Monte, Mickey met Jo Ann Bearnson. They fell in love and married on October 1, 1955. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Los Angeles Temple. During those years living in California, they started their family bringing six children, James Lee, Billy K (deceased), Mickey Jo, DeeAnn, JoDee and AnnDee, into a home bubbling with activity. After much consideration, Mickey and Jo Ann decided to move their family to Utah, settling in at 68 N. 700 E. in Provo. They lived there for thirty-seven years before moving to their current residence in Springville. Along the way, Mickey and Jo Ann added eight more children, Wendy Lynn, Richard LeRoy, Sherri Kay, Susan Eva, Kristen Martha, Jennifer Louise, Amanda Ardell and Robert Peter, for a total of 14--enough to field a coed softball team, which of course happened. Mickey attended BYU majoring in physical education. But with mounting responsibilities of work and family, he left school his junior year never being able to reach his goal of coaching high school athletics.
During Mickey’s church service, he served as counselor in the Provo 15th ward bishopric, high counselor in the Provo Bonneville Stake, Sunday school superintendent, teacher and numerous other assignments as needed. He was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved the Lord. Until the final years of his life Mickey was a regular temple attender believing strongly in the eternal ties of family.
Mickey was a great husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend. During the last 15 years of his life, Mickey suffered the debilitating effects of Alzheimer’s dementia. It is in the hope of the resurrection all that was lost will someday be found for the eternities.
Mickey was preceded in death by his parents Louie and Ardell, brother Ron, sister Carole, son Billy and grandson Byron Jr. He is survived by his wife Jo Ann, children: Jim (Melanie), Mickey Jo Simons, DeeAnn Edwards (Byron), JoDee Byrd (Jim), AnnDee Snyder (Deb), Wendy Hoffman, Richard (Jody), Sherri Nelson (Chris), Susie Fullmer (Toby), Kris Lux (TJ), Jenny Thomsen (Brian), Mandy Dunsmore (Dannie), Rob (Amber), 95 grandchildren, 68 great-grandchildren (5 more on the way), 1 great-great-grandchild on the way, a sister Penny Young (Bob) and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
