Monroe Glenn Gallier

Monroe Glenn Gallier, 88, passed away on April 5, 2017. He was born in Williamson Settlement, Orange County, Texas on October 7, 1928 to Noah E. and Ada Williamson Gallier. Monroe grew up on a dairy farm and learned the value of hard work at an early age. His father passed away when he was 9 years old, leaving him to help his Mother run the dairy business. He attended school in Vidor, Texas, graduating from Vidor High School in 1946. He excelled in leadership and football. He was team co-captain, the first All District football player from his high school and the first four year letterman.
After graduation, Monroe joined the Navy and was stationed in Guam. He attending BYU after his discharge where he met his future wife, Mignon Ahlstrom. He served an LDS mission to the Northwestern States from 1949 to 1951. Monroe and Mignon were married November 21, 1951 in the Salt Lake Temple. Monroe graduated from BYU in 1954 with a degree in Education. He taught 6th grade at Franklin Elementary School for 11 years. He completed a Masters Degree in Recreation at BYU in 1964. He was appointed Principal of Maeser Elementary School for 16 years and later became Principal at Sunset Elementary School and the Children's School at Utah State Hospital. He retired in 1988 after 34 years with Provo School District. Monroe was a member of the Provo Education Association and served as president in 1963. He was a member of UEA and elected President of all local Presidents in the State Association. He was a member of NEA, NESPA, and Phi Delta Kapa a National Educational Fraternity. Monroe founded the Big Springs Outdoor Education Program for the Provo School District in the South Fork of Provo Canyon in 1969. Big Springs Camp has since served thousands of students including some of his children, grand and great-grandchildren. Monroe loved nature and spending time with friends and family in the mountains, hunting, camping, horseback and ATV riding. The U.S. Forest Service asked him to act as volunteer coordinator for the state of Utah in helping develop the Great Western Trail which extends from Canada to Mexico.
He was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints and served in many callings including Bishop of the BYU 29 Ward. Monroe and Mignon served in the Texas Houston Mission in 1989. They were assigned to his home town of Vidor, Texas, where they enjoyed working with many of his relatives. He and his wife were also temple workers in the Provo Temple.
Monroe was loving and caring to all his family. He made great efforts to attend and support them in their special activities.
He is survived by his wife Mignon, children Linda (Paul) Holley, Mapleton; Glenn (Doreen) Gallier, Mapleton; Sharon (Kelly) Brown, Pendleton, OR; Shauna (Jon) Butler, Bountiful; 15 grandchildren, and 38 great-grandchildren. Monroe was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, 3 sisters, and grandson Ryan Gallier.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at 11 am at the Springville 9th  Ward Chapel, 878 West Center Street, Springville, UT. A viewing will be held on Monday, April 10, 2017 from 6-8 pm at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 East 200 South, Springville, UT and prior to the funeral from 10-10:45 am. Interment will be in the Provo City Cemetery.
