Phyllis Boyer Rooney, age 96, passed away on December 15, 2019 in Provo, Utah. She was born on July 29, 1923 in Springville, Utah to Selvoy Jarrett and Mary Gladys (Sessions) Boyer and was the only daughter of their five children. She graduated from Springville High School in 1941 and worked during and after World War II at US Steel Geneva Works where she met the love of her life, Carl Rooney, in 1955. Upon their marriage in November 1956, Phyllis gained a family; Carl’s children Jim and Suzanne, who she loved as her own. She and Carl were blessed with their son, Patrick, in 1958.
Phyllis and Carl moved to Farmington Hills, Michigan in 1965 and lived there until mid-1969, when Carl retired and they moved to Rogers, Arkansas where Phyllis worked for Dr. Benjamin Spock and at a medical clinic for women and children. Following Carl’s passing in 1984, Phyllis continued to work and made multiple trips to Bartlesville, OK to visit Pat and family before returning to Utah in 1999. Once in Utah, Phyllis played golf, connected with friends and family, volunteered at the Springville Art museum, and played bridge at least twice per week.
Phyllis was a faithful member of the Presbyterian Church and served in many leadership positions in both Arkansas and Utah. She especially enjoyed serving in the Presbyterian Women’s Association and was awarded a Life Membership to recognize her many years of dedicated service.
Family and relationships were of primary importance to her, and she made it a priority to stay connected with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She loved attending and organizing family gatherings and being surrounded by loved ones. Her entire family will miss her cheerful outlook, her wisdom, and the Saturday morning breakfasts she would host.
Phyllis is survived by her sons, Jim and Pat (Debbie), eleven grandchildren, twenty-five great grandchildren and eleven great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband Carl, daughter Suzanne Wilkey and son-in-law Ladd as well as brothers Keith, Lamar, Carl and Jerrol Boyer.
