Shirley Rae (Carroll) Giles

August 27, 1935 — June 24, 2022

Springville, Utah

Our beautiful, loving wife, Mother and Grandmother passed away from a lung disease she endured for over 40 years, while surrounded by her family on June 24, 2022. She was a longtime resident of Springville for over 60 years. She was born in Provo Utah on August 27, 1935 to Lorretta Maud Davis and Clarence Burrell Carroll. Shirley spent her childhood life in Orem Utah, graduating from Lincoln High School. She met her husband Max on a blind date, set up by his brother Earl and sister- in-law Val. Three months later they were married in the Salt Lake City Temple on October 28, 1953. This year they would have celebrated 69 years of marriage. Together, Max and Shirley raised 2 boys and 2 girls.
Some of Mom's many talents include, cooking, canning, sewing, keeping a spotless home, and making a variety of homemade items. Popcorn, apple pie, bread, English pancakes, and bakestone cookies, just to name a few. The treat that Grandpa Giles enjoyed most was glorified rice. She also enjoyed camping, playing cards, Sunday drives, water skiing, 4-wheeler rides, reading and loved family vacations. Mom had a great love of nature; squirrels, deer, chipmunks, and the beautiful colors of the autumn leaves. Mom loved her BYU cougars, as they were basketball season ticket holders for over 30 years. She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ, had a strong testimony of the Savior and served in many callings in Relief Society and Primary. Shirley was a dedicated visiting teacher.  She truly lived a Christ- like life, serving others unselfishly, and was full of charity. Mom was loyal, caring ,thoughtful, non-judgmental and showed a genuine interest in all. If you knew this woman, you had a friend for life.
Family was her life. Children and grandchildren were the source of happiness and joy.  Birthdays (where a card was given and a singing phone call was made to all), kids sports, dance recitals, baby blessings and baptisms were attended by Grandma and Grandpa. You can't say Max without Shirley, as they were there together, always giving love and support. Many wonderful memories were made each summer with sleepovers at Grandma's house. This outing included great homemade meals, movies, trips to the fish hatchery, feeding the ducks at the pond, crafts, ceramics, and a trip to Pizza Hut. Many memories were kept in photo albums, filled with family activities and holidays. Our Mother and Grandmother went to great lengths to make Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas special, which had party favors for all who attended.
She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Jo Ann (Ron) Dean, Roscoe (Lawana) Carroll, Ken (Ina) Carroll and Phyllis (Lloyd) Hodson. She is survived by her brother and sister-in law Marlin and Mary Giles and sister-in-law Val Giles. Also her children Dennis (Gayle) Giles, Sherrie (Steven) Robinson, Russell (Bonnie) Giles and Maxine (Lynn) Bartholomew. Her family also includes 30 Grandchildren, 39 Great-grandchildren, 3 Great, Great grandchildren, with one more on the way. What a posterity of over 80 people.
Mom had a calm demeanor, never yelling unless the house was on fire (and it really was). She was a sweet, classy lady, very well organized, a great example of love, was an influence for good, always complimented you and will be greatly missed by many. She will be in our hearts forever. We give thanks to the many care givers, especially family members who helped Mom in any way. We love you very much. God be with you 'til we meet again.
