Steven Augustine Merritt, 33, died suddenly the morning of March 7, 2018 from injuries suffered when he was struck head on while driving in Provo, Utah. Born July 9, 1984, in Denver, Colorado, Steven graduated from Bonita High School in La Verne, California in 2002.
After high school, Steven continued to pursue his passion for singing as a member of the Citrus Singers from Citrus College in Glendora, California and other choral groups in Southern California. Throughout high school and college, Steven was very active in musical theatre and performed in roles such as Inspector Javert in Les Misérables. Steven also sang in various choir ensembles throughout Los Angeles including performing with orchestral works with the Golden State Pops Orchestra at the iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall.
In 2014, Steven moved to Wichita Falls, Texas and from there to Provo, where he lived from 2016 until his tragic death. Steven was a selfless individual who loved Jesus Christ and knew that the measure of a person’s life was not defined by what they did for a living, but what they did for others while they were living. And he lived in accordance with that knowledge. With a big personality, a bigger voice, and an even bigger heart, Steven made an impact on others of all ages by caring, supporting and serving them no matter who they were or what they were going through. His kind, sweet, gentle, joyous spirit, infectious smile and laugh, angelic voice, and big “Steven hugs” will be remembered by all.
Steven is survived by those whom he loved and those who loved him, including his mother, Joyce Weston, his father, Randy Merritt, his sister, Brittany Merritt, his grandmothers, Lula Weston and Luella Merritt, his step-mother, Monica Merritt-Dyer, step-brothers William and James, and step-sisters Theresa and Erin, and the rest of his extended family. In addition to his physical family, Steven is survived by hundreds of friends across many states with whom Steven shared his humor, compassion, and love.
