Together Again, Forever
Thomas Jay Newman was born June 11, 1924 in Springville, Utah to Robert Howell and Esther Clark Newman. He passed away December 7, 2012.
Jay was born and raised near the fish hatcheries in Springville. He was born with congenital hip problems and had a limp when he started walking. He used crutches, and at the age of 5, was in the Primary Children's Hospital. However, he never let that slow him down.
Jay was a very skilled cabinet maker and hard worker. He worked for Ferres Mill in Provo and Stringham Construction in Clearfield. Many people benefited from his talents. He could build and fix anything.
Jay married his sweetheart, Betty Rhae Roberts, for time and all eternity, on October 4, 1944, in the Salt Lake Temple. Jay was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He has served in many callings including Stake Missionary, Ward Mission Leader, and on the High Counsel. Jay and Betty served a mission together in Birmingham, Alabama. Jay loved people and was a friend to everyone he met. One example of his special love was with the Indian Placement program. Pauline, Sheldon and Nellie were foster children who lived with Jay and Betty for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, siblings (Beth, Margaret, Hazel, Jerry and Bill), and his son, Dennis Jay. He is survived by his children, Jane (Griff) Lloyd of Montpelier ID, Kathleen (Gary) Mitchell of Roberts ID, Thomas Ray (Charlene) Newman of Colcord OK, Marilyn (Eugene) Colledge of Spanish Fork UT and Patricia Newman of Payson UT; daughter-in-law Elayne Newman of Provo UT; siblings, Howell and Joe Newman, Ethel Gottfredson; brother-in-law, Max Gordon and sister-in-law, June Newman.
Thanks to nurses, Julie and Amanda, at UVRMC for their care; and a special thanks to Meredith Christensen for her friendship to Jay.
