Wilda Jean Bascom Tanner, age 84, of Mapleton, Utah, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2026, surrounded by family at her home.
Wilda was born August 16, 1941, in Ballard, Utah, to Venice Manwaring Bascom and Elvyn Ira Bascom.
Wilda grew up in the Uintah Basin and graduated from Union High School in Roosevelt. She attended beauty school in Salt Lake City. Back at home in the summer of 1961, she met Norman Tanner, and they were engaged shortly after.
Wilda and Norman were married on October 17, 1961, in the Salt Lake Temple. Together, they lovingly raised six children, who certainly call her blessed. She taught them through her daily gentle example how to work hard and how to love and serve others well.
Wilda enjoyed working with young children at various preschools and creating fun lessons for them. She also touched many lives through her church callings in Nursery, Cub Scouts, Primary, and Relief Society. She was a prolific crafter and crocheter, and has created hundreds of items for her descendants and others. She made a loving home for her family in several places: Roosevelt, Ogden, Warren, and Hooper, Utah; St Clair Shores, Michigan; Sierra Vista, Arizona; and finally Mapleton, Utah.
Wilda is survived by two of her brothers, Kent and Glen, her six children, twenty grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman, her parents, Venice and Elvyn Bascom, and two of her brothers, Gordon and Dale.
Viewings will be held at Wheeler Mortuary in Mapleton, 82 West 400 North, Mapleton, Utah, on Thursday, April 16 from 6 to 8 pm, and on Friday, April 17 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel, 6877 North 10600 East, Lapoint Utah, from 11:30 to 12:15. A Celebration of Life service will follow from 12:30 to 1:45 pm, with graveside services immediately afterward.
The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to all who cared for Wilda, especially the hospice team, who helped us care for her following her cancer diagnosis in March.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made towards Wilda’s (and Norman's) headstone (Venmo annette-warnick-1).
Condolences may be expressed to the family on this page.
