William (Bill) Roger Helwig passed away peacefully on Sunday; January 31st, 2021 surrounded by his loving family. He is finally reunited with his eternal companion, Barbara.
Bill was born on May 25th, 1940 in Olds, Alberta, Canada to Herbert Helwig and Olga Ida Meidinger. He was the youngest of seven children. He married Barbara Kaye Miller in Lodi, CA on July 22, 1960. She preceded him in death on June 25th, 2001.
He will always be remembered as an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served in many capacities such as Sunday School teacher, Ward Missionary, Scoutmaster, Full-Time service missionary and Branch President. His dedication to missionary work and genealogy will bless his family and generations yet to come.
In addition to genealogy, his hobbies included metal detecting, sword collecting, coin collecting, searching ghost towns, watching sports, playing games, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Bill is survived by his three children: Roger (Jeni) Helwig of Reno, NV; Michelle (Gary) Kunzler of Easley, SC; Donna (Shawn) Hair of Lehi, UT; twelve grandchildren: Shalyn (David) Gleason, Ryan (Mara) Kunzler, Alysha Young, Brittney (Dustin) Phelps, Lana (Melissa) Welch, Brooke (Michael) Hanna, Austin (Chanda) Kunzler, Lakin Helwig, Olivia Guzman (Noah) Valdez, Hunter Helwig, Christian Hair (Shae Cox), and Bridger Helwig; 18 great grandchildren: Emma, Ryan, Eva and Adam Kunzler, Dustin and Gabriella Phelps, Caroline and Michael Hanna, Kambri, Kesli, Kamden, Kapresse, Kaden, Koen, Kordon, and Kinlee Gleason, and Brooklyn and Collins Guzman.
He is also survived by a sister, Alice Jolly of Lodi, CA, sisters-in-law Tricia Spencer of Lodi, CA and Bonnie Miller of Salt Lake City, UT, and former wife, Valerie Karren of Las Vegas, NV. He is preceded in death by both his parents, Herbert Helwig and Olga Ida Meidinger, and brothers Melvin Hellwig, Calvin Hellwig, Lloyd Hellwig, and sister Phyllis Hellwig (Lehr).
We especially want to thank the many nurses, caregivers and doctors at the Pointe Meadows Health and Rehabilitation center in Lehi, UT. You took such amazing care of our dad (grandpa/great grandpa). We will be forever grateful for your caring service to him.
A viewing for family and friends will be held Friday, February 5th from 6 to 8 pm at the Wheeler Mortuary in Mapleton, 82 West 400 North, Mapleton, UT 84664. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 6th at 11 am at the Wheeler Mortuary in Springville, 211 East 200 South, Springville, UT 84663. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery immediately following the services. The Evergreen Cemetery is located just west of Highway 89 at 1997 South 400 East in Springville, UT.
In lieu of flowers, please feel free to donate to your local Ward Mission Fund or the General Mission Fund or to FamilySearch.com to promote genealogy research.
