Byran Elmer Longmore

Byran Elmer Longmore was born on Feb 21, 1946, at home in Salt Lake City, Utah. As in birth, he also died at home in Mapleton Utah, on Jan 10, 2020 at 73-years-old from complications of Parkinson’s disease.

Byran demonstrated artistic talent at a young age. He had a sketch of the prophet Joseph Smith published in the December 1956 edition of the Friend. He enjoyed all sports and won a marble competition at his school in the 6th grade. (He informed us that he only won because his brother Val wasn’t old enough to compete.)

At the age of 12, Byran began working at an egg ranch, where using a light behind the egg to find the double-yolked eggs because they charged more money for them. After the egg ranch, he worked at Albertson’s. As he was not 16 and couldn’t drive a car, he hitchhiked to work until he saved enough money to buy a moped.

Byran enjoyed working with his hands (and might have been a slight perfectionist). He worked on cars throughout his life. As a young man he put a Corvette transmission in his 1955 Chevrolet Series 150. Then in his 40s he restored a 1972 Jeep.

Byran joined the military after finishing high school and served for six years in Marine Corps Reserves.

Byran met Barbara Ann Hellewell at Dee’s Drive In. Byran, usually a shy young man, must have known she was special and convinced her to give him a ride home in her yellow Malibu. Byran loved cars, so we’re not sure if it was the car or Barbara, but it was definitely the start of something special.

Byran was promoted to Assistant Grocery Manager at Albertson’s, where he was robbed at gun point one Halloween night. The police brought out mug shots for Byran to look through. Although he did not find the culprits, he was surprised when he recognized a few people he had gone to high school with.

After working for Cream of Weber delivering milk to grocery stores, he learned the art of brick masonry working for his father-in-law, Joseph Hellewell. He then opened his own contracting business, BEL Masonry. As an artist, Byran created many beautiful fireplaces and homes throughout his career. In the late 80s, Byran went back to school in computer aided drafting.

In his 40s, Byran started considering his future and retirement, as construction was down. He decided to go back to the trucking industry and worked for Consolidated Freightways and Roadway until his retirement.

Byran and Barbara were married and sealed together on January 26, 1967 in the Salt Lake City Temple. They lived in Murray Utah for 29 years. Together they raised four children before moving to Mapleton Utah. They have lived in Mapleton for 21 years.

Byran’s true loves included Barbara, his children, the gospel of Jesus of Christ, ice cream, and wood working. Byran could fix anything; and if he couldn’t fix it, he could Jerry-rig something to make it work right. He was an artist constructing fireplaces, designing and building his own home, and creating masterpieces on his final love, the lathe. He was generous in his creations giving away many pieces to neighbors, friends getting married, and family. These pieces included pens, ornaments, salt shaker and pepper grinders, bowls, and paper towel holders.

Byran loved serving both his neighbors and in church. He and Barbara served as missionaries at the Springville Cannery.

He was an incredible man. He was honest, patient, kind, funny, generous, and loving. Once while doing some brickwork at Hogle Zoo, Byran observed a monkey that was being climbed all over by the young monkeys. This wise monkey just sat sedate and unmoving without care that he was being overrun. He made the mistake of informing his family of this observation and was given the moniker “The Old Monkey” by his children. Like that “Old Monkey”, Byran was solid and dependable, and was willing to help anyone.

He is survived by sweetheart and wife of 53 years Barbara Ann Longmore (Hellewell) and children Nickolai (Charlotte) Longmore and their children Megan (Devon) Smith and Lucas; Lori (Michael) Snider and their children Jessica, Richard, and Natalie; Michelle (Christopher) Rock and their children Zachary and Brayden; and Adam (Jenny) Longmore and their children Odessa, Addison, and Elijah. He is also survived by brothers DeWayne (Evelyn), Steve (Georgia), Del (Corrine), Orlan (Shirley), Val (MaryAnn), sisters Alaina (Ernest) Heward and Sharla Wailes. Brother-in-laws Richard (Jan) Hellewell, Jerry (Linda) Hellewell and sister-in-law Sherrie (Ed) Sears. Presided in death by brothers Don (Mary), Lew (Anna Marie) sister LaVon (Bob) Hunt.

We love you and look forward to seeing you again at the end of our mortal journeys.
