Dee Hubbard

Ernest Dee Hubbard, 92, of Springville, UT, husband of the late Patricia Kaye Hurren Hubbard, passed away Saturday, November 13, 2021. Dee was born at home on February 6, 1929, in Wellsville, UT, son of the late Ernest Benjamin Hubbard and the late Pearl Jones Hubbard. As a young boy, his first paying job was as a newspaper carrier: and later, during WWII, Dee spent a summer working in an orchard in Box Elder County with German POWs, making a whopping 85 cents an hour.
As he explained it, Dee was “awakened to the excitement of the thinking process” by his outstanding Junior High School math teacher who helped him with college level algebra in eighth grade. This paved the way for his future career as an accounting professor.
Dee’s college education at Utah State University began with classes related to his accounting major; but with the Korean War looming, Dee prepared himself for active military duty by enrolling in Military Science and completing two years of ROTC. He served the United States with honor in Korea as First Lieutenant until several months after the Korean War armistice in 1953. Thanks to airplanes and the International Date Line, Dee made it home from Korea to his family in Utah just in time for Christmas that year.
After his military service, Dee was called on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to South Africa, where, because of his previous years in the military, he was referred to as “the old man of the mission.” He took this as a badge of honor and loved his time teaching and serving the wonderful people of South Africa.
While earning his MBA at the University of Utah, Dee met Patricia Hurren, who was then a professor at the U of U. They married in August 1959 in the Salt Lake Temple. At the time of Pat’s passing, they had been married and inseparable for 57 years.
When Dee began a one-year faculty appointment at Brigham Young University, Pat had been recruited to teach at BYU, so in 1959, both began a very fulfilling connection to BYU that lasted for the rest of their lives. After Dee earned his PhD at the University of Washington, he headed back to BYU for his 30+ year career as a professor in the Accounting Department, with various roles in the administration of the Marriot School of Business.
In 1993-1994, shortly after the end of the Soviet Union, Dee and Pat served a full-time couples mission in St. Petersburg, Russia, for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Dee was a faithful worker in the Church over his lifetime, serving in many different callings and positions, including (in 1992-1993) a service mission, with Pat, in the Church Auditing Department. Dee was also a long-time member of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers and loved their monthly get-togethers.
Dee also loved to travel with his wife and family. Dee and Pat toured the Holy Land and Egypt, Scandinavia, Brazil and Peru, Hawaii, Alaska, the Canadian Rockies, and many places in Europe. And with family, Dee visited Yellowstone, Bryce Canyon, and the Oregon Coast – places he loved – too many times to count.
Above all, Dee’s life centered on his family, to whom he was completely devoted. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pat; his parents; three sisters, Arda Mae Kidman, Dorothy Hubbard Bradshaw, and Mary Martha Shawhan; and one brother, Reed Jones Hubbard. He is survived by his brother Ferris Jay Hubbard; as well as his three sons, Jeffrey Dee (Lynette) Hubbard, James Brian Hubbard, and Daniel Malin (Angela) Hubbard; one daughter, Heidi Kaye Hubbard; and eight grandchildren, Dax, Derrick, Aubrey, Ryan, Sarah, Isaac, Rachel, and Camille.
The Hubbard family offers a special thank you to the Springville Ashford Assisted Living staff and the Canyon HomeCare & Hospice personnel for their kindness, understanding, and skillful care for Dee.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Perpetual Education Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints or a charity of one’s choice.
There will be a Visitation (viewing) held Friday, November 19th from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, November 20th from 11:00 - 11:30 a.m. at the Mapleton Wheeler Mortuary at 82 West 400 North in Mapleton. Graveside services will be held Saturday, November 20th at 12:00 in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery.
