Our hero, our rock of Gibraltar, our dad Edward Thomas Murdock passed on to the happy hunting ground on Saturday, May 28, 2022 at 11:10 PM to be reunited with his sweetheart who had passed on 11 year’s earlier. Dad was born on October 10, 1925 to Edward Teancum Murdock and Bertha Mayho Jeffs Murdock in Heber City, UT.
He was their first child but he had numerous older half brothers and sisters. Both of his parents had been widowed. When dad was 4 years old, he was joined by a little brother, Bert. Being born to older parents they often left him with his older siblings to be watched over. His Dad would ride his horse out to the reservation and stay weeks at a time. We are all so proud of our Native American heritage. Dad’s mother was born in England and came to the states in 1898 as a young teenager.  With parents such as his, there were many tales to tell and dad was a fabulous story teller with an explicit memory for remembering the smallest of details.
Dad played the clarinet and in 7th grade was place in the high school band. He remarked that this was a challenge with his young legs and having never been taught to march while playing an instrument. With this experience he got to travel around the state going to competitions and he loved this. At the tender age of 17 he joined the Army Air Corp. He was stationed on many different bases as he learned to fly. The war ended before he was sent into battle.
Dad attended Brigham Young University graduating with a BS in Fine Arts. While attending university he was introduced to a beautiful young nursing student with golden blonde locks. It was a match made in Heaven and on March 17, 1948 he married Gloria Palfreyman in The Salt Lake Temple. They made their home in Springville and were blessed with four children. Steven Ed, Nancy Gloria, Patricia Ann and Richard Dean.
Dad supported his family by drawing custom home plans and then building these beautiful homes. Springville is dotted with homes that dad built. Dad was instrumental in bringing the Springville Industrial Park to fruition. Dad spent many years on the Springville Planning Board and then served as a Springville City Councilman for many years. In the early 70’s dad built Murdock Industries that specialized in custom cabinets. They delivered cabinets all over the state and even as far as Washington DC. His grandsons were given the opportunity to learn from the best. They were all allowed to work under dads care. I know this job helped many of them to work while they continue on with their university studies.
Dad loved two sports, downhill skiing and golf. He and mom took up skiing in their thirties and went skiing every Wednesday with a couple of friends. He used to take the family on a winter ski trips to Vail, Colorado. As the grandchildren learned to ski he would take them up skiing. He and mom learned to golf as Hobble Creek Golf Course opened. This is before there was a clubhouse. Dad took a break from golfing while mom was sick but with her passing on, golf came back into his life. The last game he played was on the Monday before he passed. He had a couple of close friends that he would go with. Reed has past on and this leaves Don to golf alone. Dad thoroughly enjoyed his games with these two. Dad managed to get a hole in one on all three par holes except for 16. On Monday his ball just missed a hole in one by just a couple of inches. Dad had the opportunity to golf on many famous courses all over the world while he and mom traveled.
Dad was an artist. He painted oil paintings throughout his life. When mom passed on, dad got his paints out. Each of us children received two paintings or more. He painted each grandchild a painting of their choice. These paintings are such a treasure to each of us. Dad taught himself to play the piano and was a voracious reader. He loved reading books dealing with WWII.
Dad was an active member in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served faithfully in many capacities throughout his life. He served for decades as the financial clerk. Dad and mom raised us in a very loving Christ like home. Dad never left the house without giving mom a kiss. They showed such love for one another. When mom was injured in the car accident, dad took over all her nursing for the next 16 years.
Dad is the last of all his siblings. His dad preceded him when he was 13 years old, the year 1938. His Mom passed in January 1982 and Mom preceded Dad in 2011. What a joyous reunion they are having. Dad is survived by his four children; Steven (Janine) Murdock and Nancy (Rick) Newton, Springville. Pat (Mike) Spencer, Mapleton. Dick (Kathy) Murdock, West Haven, UT. 14 grandchildren; Brian, Creed, Miranda, Todd, Tyler, McKell, Paul, Greg, Mike, Wendy, Crystal, Jaycee, Zachary, Rebecca. He is survived by 35 great grandchildren.
A private viewing and graveside services with full military rites was held on June 4, 2022. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery. A memorial service will be held on June 18, 2022 at 12:00 PM at the LDS chapel located at 245 S. 600 E. Springville.
Dad we will miss you every day until we are reunited with you. We will try to live our lives in honor of you and mom and pray that you will be pleased with us. Till we meet again, we will hold you in our hearts.
