Harold Leon Woodward, 86, of Mapleton, Utah, peacefully passed away on the 17th of January 2021 surrounded by loved ones after a difficult battle with cancer.
Leon was born on the 15th of January 1935 to Leonard Andrew Woodward and Rhoda Mae (Simpson) in the city of Raton, New Mexico.
Leon lived with Fremont and Berniece Miller from the ages of 15 to 21. During this time, he learned valuable beekeeping skills, and Mr. & Mrs. Miller became his second family.
In 1957, Leon entered military service on June 8, 1957. He went to basic training at Fort Ord; after which he was transferred to Fort Devens in Massachusetts for specialized training. In April of 1958, he was transferred to Japan as part of the Army Security Agency. During his military service he became interested in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His commanding officer looked up all the “LDS” service men and got them go to church. He was also baptized a member of the Church at this time.
Leon graduated from Dubois High School in 1954. In 1961, he met the love of his life DeAnn Hawkins at Brigham Young University. They went on to have six children.
After BYU, he started his own photography business, PHOTOCRAFT. Leon was talented in many things such as woodwork, construction, sculpting and photography. He was an award-winning photographer and had exhibits at the Springville Museum of Art and Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum. He was an adventurous spirit and loved to travel. One of his favorite photography adventures was when he went to Svalbard Islands and took pictures of polar bears.
Out of all his accomplishments he considered his greatest to be his family. He was an avid outdoorsman and often took his family camping. He was a loving, kind, gentle, hardworking man, and he will be greatly missed and always remembered.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents (Leonard & Rhoda), his brother (Frank), his son (Fremont), and 3 grandkids, (Jared, Jackson, and Tabrina).
He is survived by his wife DeAnn, his daughters, Dana Woodward, Sidney (Richard) Wyland, Leslie (Spencer) Hansen, Kristy (Brett) Swanson and Obnette (Ben) Furner, and his 24 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
