Ida "Geniel" (Hansen) Twitchell

July 27, 1929 — March 7, 2021

Springville

Geniel, in her 92nd year, passed away Sunday March 7th from the natural decline of age.  She departed peacefully in the evening attended by family after a full and rewarding life.

Born in Lakeside, Navajo county, Arizona, Geniel is survived by her brother, Max Hansen, her children Vivian, John, David and Hans, 18 grandchildren, 22 Great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.  Her parents, John Clark and Ida West Hansen, and six siblings have gone before her.

Geniel graduated from High School in Mesa Arizona and attended Brigham Young University where she majored in Physical Education and English.  While in college she met Gordon Twitchell and in 1950, after some courtship they were married in the Mesa Arizona Temple.  Geniel and Gordon began a family upholstery and carpet business that grew and prospered along with their family of one daughter and three sons.  She loved education and completed her bachelor’s degree, obtained a teaching certificate and taught school in Cedar City, Utah.  She also continued to care for accounting, bookkeeping, taxes, and business details along with sewing and raising her family.  Possibly her fondest contribution was teaching piano to hundreds of beginning and intermediate musicians during nearly seventy years of her life.

In 1970 Gordon sold the upholstery business and they moved to Mesa Arizona where Geniel cared tenderly for her ailing parents.  She and Gordon subsequently moved to Provo where they bought, remodeled and manage income and hospitality properties in Provo, Fillmore, Nephi and Price.  She seldom had work that had set hours and like Gordon spent long hours in various focused activities well beyond what was normal for most occupation. In addition Geniel served untiringly as a primary teacher, choir accompanist and many positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints including many years as an ordinance worker in the Provo, Utah temple.  She served a full time proselyting mission in Virginia with her husband and afterward two additional service missions at the Provo Missionary Training Center.  Underlying her life—spanning more than 70 years, in every ward that she lived in during her married life, she served as organist.

Geniel loved softball, tennis, hiking and camping, bowling, golfing and attending BYU basketball and football games. She produced voluminous correspondence, was an accomplished seamstress, and certified in various herbal and natural healing disciplines.  Wherever possible she maintained a vegetable and flower garden and usually planted fruit trees where there were none.  She produced voluminous handwritten and later digital correspondence and as work outside the home finally decreased, she undertook family history and genealogy work with earnest.

Geniel loved the Lord, served faithfully, prayed, studied, mourned with, loved and lifted others even beyond her comfortable circle of neighbors, family and friends.  She fought the good fight, finished her course and kept the faith, and was beloved by all who were privileged to know her.
