Janet (Cragun) Woodfield

Janet Cragun Woodfield’s joyous reunion with her loving Heavenly Father took place on October 3, 2021, where she was reunited with her beloved “Sweetheart” and many of her dear family and friends.

Janet was born on July 10, 1934 in Ogden, Utah to Earl Budge and Mildred Rhees Cragun. She had six siblings: Molly Ann, Helen, Norma Rae, Brent Earl, David Rhees, and Connie Mildred. She was raised in Pleasant View, Utah where her family developed many enduring, beloved traditions and worked together in their orchard, The Good Earth. Janet’s ability to work hard was a trait she valued and instilled in her own family.

Janet met the love of her life, Leon Warren Woodfield, on the first day of 1st grade. Theirs was a great love story that flourished in their early years, even after Leon set Janet on the drinking fountain in 9th grade. Their love was solemnized through marriage in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on September 10, 1953 and extended over sixty years until Leon’s death in 2013. Janet missed her “Sweetheart” greatly and eagerly awaited the time that they could be together again.

Janet and Leon raised their family in Springville, Utah. Janet was a dedicated mother to her five children and their spouses: Janalee and Steven Hallmark, Heidi and Bill Woahn, Melia and Steve Fidel, Craig Leon and Marilee Whiting Woodfield, and Chris Weldon and Lesley Ponder Woodfield. Janet’s greatest joy was her family. She was an incredible grandmother to 22 grandchildren and a loving “GeeGee” to 39 great grandchildren.

Janet had a beautiful singing voice. Her children were awakened many mornings with Janet singing “Oh What a Beautiful Morning, Oh What a Beautiful Day.” Music filled Janet’s home and her free time. She was a member of “The Musettes” for many years, and some of her very dearest friends were members of her “Quartet” who sang at community and church events. Janet loved the theater and performed in many plays and musicals. Her legacy in theater and music inspired many of her grandchildren to follow in her path.

Later in life, Janet earned a Bachelor of Science in Geography from Brigham Young University. She chose to study geography with an emphasis in travel and tourism to better understand other people and cultures in the countries she loved to visit throughout the world with Leon and other family members.

Janet was involved in many community activities including Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, Springville Art Council and Art Ball Committees, PTA president, and a group of ladies she affectionately called “Club.” Janet was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served as Stake and Ward Relief Society president, member of the church general curriculum and writing committee, primary chorister, and dedicated ministering sister. She and Leon served as full-time missionaries in Oklahoma. She lived her life as a testimony of her love for our Savior.

Janet loved creating a beautiful environment for those around her. Her 18 exquisite Christmas trees are legendary, and the number of tablecloths she owned is record breaking! Her myriad of handmade quilts have kept loved ones warm. Janet’s memory will be kept alive through the many cherished traditions she established and the memories she created for her family. Her posterity will not hang up Christmas stockings, hold the annual backyard water fight, or search for Easter eggs without thinking of their dear mother and grandmother: she was the curator for many meaningful activities her family loves.

Janet’s family thanks the countless friends, neighbors, church members, and medical professionals who helped make Janet comfortable and happy in her final years. They were the loving hearts and hands in times of need. Thank you all!

A celebration of Janet’s life will be held on Saturday, October 9th at 10:00 am at the Springville 3rd Ward LDS chapel, 355 E. Center Street, Springville, Utah. Well-wishers may also greet the family on Friday evening, October 8, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 E. 200 South, Springville and before the service from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at the church.

Janet’s final resting place will be next to her Sweetheart in the Ben Lomond Cemetery in North Ogden Utah.
