Janey Wright (Moffett) Cohen

March 6, 1934 — October 17, 2020

Janey Wright Cohen, 86, passed away Saturday, October 17, 2020 from natural causes at her Springville, Utah residence in the presence of family. Named Janey Beth, she was born March 6, 1934 in Texas City, Texas, the first of four children born to oil industry worker Clifford Mahlon Moffett and homemaker Nita Terral Moffett. They were a very close-knit family.
She with her sisters and brother grew up together during the Great Depression, World War II and the postwar 1940’s and ‘50’s in rural Acadia Parish in southwest Louisiana. Her primary education was obtained at The Oil Fields School and Evangeline Elementary, and she graduated from Iota High School with 25 classmates in May of 1952. She was heavily involved in 4-H club activities, was a member of Future Business Leaders of America and lettered in high school basketball.
She attended Louisiana Polytechnic Institute (now known as Louisiana Tech University) in Ruston, Louisiana, did student teaching in typing at Ruston High School, and graduated in August of 1956 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business and English Education. She received a 50-year alumnus certificate from Louisiana Tech in 2006.
Her first job was as a secretary in Shreveport, which is where she met her first husband. Janey married William Jack Wright on December 7, 1956 in Bossier City. She and Bill had two children, Leah in 1959 and David in 1960. She convinced Bill to return to college and graduate, after which they both taught at schools in Texas, Ohio, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Colorado. They were divorced in 1977. She later pursued graduate studies at Colorado State University, the University of Colorado, and Brigham Young University and was a member of the Phi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.
After teaching at Grand Junction High School from 1968 to 1980, Janey moved to Provo, Utah. She taught at several schools in the area, including Stevens Henager College, Provo Canyon School, Orem Junior High School, New Mothers High School, Mountainville Academy, Provo High School as a substitute teacher, and Discovery Academy from which she retired in 2020.
Janey married Irving Harold Cohen on June 21, 1985 in Provo and they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints the following year. Together, they adopted Janey’s grandson, James, when he was six years old and raised him to adulthood. She freely gave Jimmy her all. Janey and Irving later divorced.
She had many interests, including her family, literature, music (especially hymns), interior design, art, community service, and BYU football and basketball. She also served on the Provo Cultural Affairs Board.
Janey is survived by sisters Patsy (Earl) Hartsell of Elm Grove, Louisiana and Nina (James) Gunter of San Antonio, Texas; brother Clifford M. Moffett, Jr. of Jennings, Louisiana; children Leah (Coy) Vincent of Grand Junction, Colorado; David (Judy) Wright of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana; and James Cohen of Draper, Utah; five nephews and one niece; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous step-children and step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, former husbands William Wright and Irving Cohen, grandson Harrison William Wright, and nephew Lane Webb.
Arrangements were made through Wheeler Mortuary in Springville.
