Emblem

Our beloved husband, father, and granddad Louis Darrell Kinyon, 87, of Mapleton was called back to our Heavenly Father on Tuesday, January 18th, 2022.  He was born December 2, 1934, in Harrison, Arkansas to his loving parents Merle Kinyon and Zola Bell Fenn Kinyon.  Louie married his high-school sweetheart Ellen Ranae Preston April 10th, 1953, in Sunnyside, Utah.  In 1964 they were sealed as an eternal family in the Manti temple.

Louie proudly and dutifully served in the United States Navy where he received training as a medical corpsman. After his dedicated service, he then began his 35 year-long profession as a medical lab technician in hematology at Utah Valley Hospital.

Louie was a man of many interests and talents, which led to many hobbies, including making recurve bows, leather working, jewelry-making, taxidermy, and oil painting.  However, his true passion and gift was for wood carving.  He created many stunning pieces which expressed his love for nature, animals, and his Savior. Louie mastered his art over 30 years, and was renowned for his talent and creativity.  This led to him receiving many recognitions, ribbons, honors, and awards.  He especially enjoyed sharing his talents with others and teaching them the art of wood-carving.

One of Louie’s greatest joys was spending time with his family at their mountain property, where he relished in the beauty and peacefulness of nature and received inspiration for his wood carvings.  Louie especially found delight in carving totem poles for the property, which still stand as sentinels protecting the nature he loved so much.  In addition, Louie enjoyed riding motorcycles, having many cross-country adventures with his loving wife, family, and friends.  He also found pleasure in four-wheeling, hunting, fishing, and camping.  Moreover, he was a fan of BYU football and basketball.  He was a member of the LDS church where he served in several callings.

Louie is loved by countless people.  We will miss his wild stories from his adventurous youth, his passion for the outdoors, and his unique sense of humor and disposition for practical jokes.  He is survived by his eternal sweetheart of 68 years Ellen, as well as by his four children: Darrell, Doug (Arlee), Terry, and Kelly (Bradford).  He is beloved by his 12 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.  Louie was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers - Gene, Buck and Ronald.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 25th at 11:00 AM in the Mapleton White Church located at 31 West Maple Street in Mapleton.  A viewing for family and friends will be held Monday night from 6:00PM - 8:00PM at Wheeler Mortuary at 82 West 400 North in Mapleton, and on Tuesday morning prior to the service from 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM at the church.  He will be laid to rest with military rights at the Mapleton City Cemetery.
