Mary Faye (Smith) Alger

December 18, 1945 — October 27, 2019

In the evening hours of Sunday October 27, 2019, the loving, giving, faithful, kind heart of Mary Faye Smith Alger (73) was no longer able to sustain her earthly body and was released to join her many family members in Heaven. Even though her body was riddled with infirmity, Mary was always quick to love and serve others.

Mary was born to Luther Glen Smith and Marjorie Fern Hoagland on December 8, 1945 in Nampa, Idaho. She was raised on the quaint prairies and grande mountains of Idaho in the towns of Kooskia and Donnelly among others. She often recalled her childhood experiences of following her brothers, swimming in rivers, hiking the mountains and living in a tent and a dugout and other simple yet profound memories.

Mary later moved east and married James Allen Alger. After a few short years, she divorced and again made her home in Idaho where she raised her 2 daughters and helped care for her parents and sister, Frances. Before her ailing body took over, she worked at the Idaho State Hospital where 2 of her siblings resided. Mary accomplished her dream of graduating as an Elementary Ed teacher after attending LCSC in Lewiston, Idaho and BYU in Provo, Utah. Her health did not allow her to work in that field but she often shared her knowledge to help her grandkids and other children.

Mary enjoyed nature, playing the piano, singing alto, writing pen pals, putting together puzzles, going to church and being with family. On any nice day, you could find her driving her chair to the Springville library to quench her love for reading and being outdoors. She would bring home a bag full of books and read at least 1 whole book every day.

Mary had a deep, undeniable faith in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. She was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Her testimony could be felt and seen by the way she lived. Her favorite calling in the church was that of primary pianist. She held that calling until she could no longer physically walk into the building to play.

Mary is survived by her 2 daughters Dawn Loveless, Jeanne (Dustin) McNeil, her brother Gary (Karen) Abbott, and sister Jan (Ed) dos Ramos. She will also be dearly missed by her grandkids Daniel, Mindy, John, Jehni(Jason), Erica (Porter), Jaden(Nerissa), Kenna, Zachary, Tanner, Dustin and Jaxn and also 3 great grandsons...but is reunited with her granddaughter Rebecka, son-in-law Barry, her parents, 3 brothers, a sister and many other family members and friends.

Mary’s lifelong love and service to her family, friends and even those she didn’t know, along with her deep faith and devotion to her Heavenly Father will stand as an example and a legacy to all that knew her.

Services will be held Friday, November 1, 2019 at the LDS chapel located at 672 N 250 W in Springville, Utah, with visitation one-hour prior. Interment will be in the Springville City Cemetery.
