Obituary

Paul Eugene Gottfredson was reunited with the love of his life on Sunday, August 16, 2020 .  He passed away at the Bennion Veterans Home in Payson.  He was born on January 23, 1932 in Springville, Utah, one of four sons born to Merrill Edward Gottfredson and Martha Melva Henrie.  He built a full life of memories in his short 88 years with us.

Paul loved life and lived it to the fullest.  He gave 100% to everything starting from a very young age.  He was a high school basketball star at Springville High School.  His awards may still be in their trophy case.  Every sport he tried, including bowling and golf, were sports where he excelled.  He loved people, nature, road trips with his wife and was an extremely talented artist and sculptor.  He also had an intense sense of humor, loved hunting and fishing and spent many years on Flaming Gorge with his wife on their boat in search of Lake Trout.  He always said he was born 100 years too late because he had an intense love of the old west that was reflected in his paintings and sculptures.  He especially loved old westerns on TV, even the ones in black and white. and watched John Wayne movies over and over.
Paul worked for many years until his retirement as a welder at Geneva Rock.  He was a very honored and respected employee who worked hard to live, not lived to just work hard.

He married the love of his life, LaRee DeGraw Gottfredson, on August 19th, 1972, that marriage later solemnized in the Provo temple on June 9, 2015.  After LaRee passed he was very lonely but built a new and extremely loving family in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with the kind and loving people of the 2nd and 3rd Springville wards.  He talked about them frequently in the past four years so we got to know them as family.

In April 1952 at age 20, Paul joined the Navy during the Korean war.  He served from April 1952 until an honorable discharge in April 1956.  He served on  the U.S.S. Frontier (AD25), a battleship, in the Korean area.  He recalled a situation where a torpedo hit his ship and went right through three decks without exploding.  Paul was so proud of his military service that he joined the American Legion and served in that capacity as long as he could.

Paul is survived by two brothers, Don Edward Gottfredson (Wanda) and Phillip B. Gottfredson and stepchildren, Dennis Barney (Sheila) and Lynnette Rose.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Merrill and Melva Gottfredson, his wife, LaRee Gottfredson, and one brother, David E. Gottfredson.

Paul will be greatly missed by many people.
